I took Mickey in for a grooming yesterday and I told her to cut him down a bit so he looked just like he was but shorter. When I got there she said that he was too matted and shaved him down all of the way like we do in the summer, AND she cut his face and head like a poodle. Nothing wrong with poodles. I have owned them in the past, but I just adored his doodle face and now he has a pointed snout and a poofy head. Any suggestions to remedy his head, besides waiting for his hair to grow back?

I just read through the matting suggestions so will take that to the bank. I thought I was being a great doodle owner, but found that I wasn't getting far enough down into his coat.

Sandi, The same thing happened to Dunkin, luckily it grew back pretty fast and he looks doodley again!
Thanks so much for the encouraging words! I feel much better than when I wrote early yesterday!
He really doesn't look bad and it seems that it will grow out very evenly all over. He is still beautiful.
You're right! And he doesn't seem to mind. In fact, he seems to have more energy. I guess all of that hair was slowing him down. It got a bit warm here in Vegas so we thought a little trim would help. We just weren't expecting this. The shock has worn off and life goes on. It will all grow back. I certainly remember some pretty nasty haircuts in my earlier days! My hair is curly like Mickey and one girlfriend was cutting my hair and couldn't get the sides the same length so kept adjusting and cutting shorter until it was so short that my hair wouldn't curl! Yikes! Luckily, it grew back and so will Mickey's hair.
Oh my, I hate it when they get a bad hair cut...Maybe we should have a slide show of bad hair cuts then we could all console each other....Good thing it grows back, amazing how different they can look with short hair.
That's a good idea to send to Adina. We could all learn from the photos.
It's not too bad! The good thing, it does grow back and quite fast. I have seen them allot worse, as to where you could see the skin on them. At least, he will be easy to comb out for a while! Keep smiling. He is still adorable looking!
Thanks! You're right. And the key word it COMBing! I didn't know! I do know now!
I would have cried and cried with you Sandi. Mickey is adorable and I bet you can't wait until he growns his coat back. Our Mocha is so matted and I keep trying to get the mats out every day. Over night she seems to mat more. Perhaps we don't have the right tools to get the mats out. I DON'T want to have her sheared. It is winter here and she loves the snow and cold, plus we think she is so cute with hair!!!! Keep posting pictures of Mickey so we can see how he progresses with his growth of hair.
Oh, you are so sweet! Funny enough, it felt like it was 20 degrees this morning, with the wind chill and he didn't mind at all. He seems to have more energy without all of the hair. I grew up in MN so I know what the Midwestern weather can deliver. I will post photos of him as requested. I gather now that a metal comb is the key and being able to get down to see the skin. The groomer said that she used a lot of conditioner to get everything done. Mocha looks adorable with his coat, but as I have realized, the only ones who really care about it are the humans who love them. He frolics around and his friends don't judge him. How wonderful dogs are and the unconditional love that they are so known for. They even have it for each other. If only we could be so fortunate for all humans to have that trait. One can only strive and we learn every day from these beautiful creatures, inside and out.
Hi Sandi,
He is so cute that even a "bad" haircut can't spoil his looks! When we had Coco cut for the first time, at about 9-10 months, we also thought that we were doing a good job on her grooming and the same thing happened. Her coat DID grow back in fine!! Also her coat is not so thick and tight curled and has changed in the last year or so, so now it is much easier to maintain. We do keep her cut at about 1" on her body, but I like her face hair longer! We just love them all to death no matter what!!
Thanks for saying so! It has already settled and he is dirty from playing hard in the dog park, so he's looking more like our Mickey already.

Where do you take Coco? I still haven't found anyone who can cut him right yet.
