Champion Foods will be selling at Petco...thoughts
Champion posted what is happening on their FB page this morning. The comments were pretty angry accusing Champion of "selling out". Do you think this will change the quality. I feed my dogs the Fit and Trim. Thoughts?....

Well, this is pretty interesting. The part about Petco no longer selling any foods that contain artificial colors, flavors or preservatives is great news. The part about Champion agreeing to sell through Petco is worrisome. It doesn't make sense that they stopped selling through chewy when chewy was sold to Petco, but they will sell to Petco now???
It could be an indication that the rumors of Champion selling the company to Nestle-Purina are true. I just don't know.
I am now at the point where I would advise anyone who is feeding Orijen or Acana to start looking around for another brand. -

Just got my last bag and it was free (buy 12 get the 13th one free) at my local store. Any suggestions for Fit and Trim substitution? My dogs were doing well on it.

That's going to be tougher, because it's a reduced calorie formula and those are not common. You may have to go with a senior formula.
I'll try to find something tomorrow; it's 12:30 here and I'm going to bed. :) -

Carla, for now (I'll try and do some more research) your best bet might be Wellness CORE Reduced fat. The animal proteins are similar. The macronutrient profile on the Fit & Trim is pretty amazing- 42% protein and only 13% fat, which is going to be impossible to duplicate. The CORE formula is 33% and 10%, which may be as close as we can get. The CORE formula also has about 40 calories per cup less, so you may have to feed a tad more. But if weight is an issue, the lower calories might be a good thing.

The CORE line also has a senior formula which has a macronutrient profile very similar to the reduced fat: 32% protein, 12% fat, and one calorie less than the reduced fat version. The main difference is that there is additional glucosamine and chondroitin in the senior formula, which may help with asome of the orthopedic issues of aging (nobody really knows for sure), and more Omega 3 fatty acids, which ARE known to be beneficial. So that might be a good choice for you.

I was looking at the Bixbi Rawbble recently. If you want to go with raw, that's a whole other thing. The macronutrient percentages are totally different due to the much higher moisture content, so it's hard to tell what is most comparable to the current food. For dogs without any health issues requiring any type of special diet, you can just pick something and follow the feeding guidelines for age & weight. But for dogs with any kind of issues, I'm not sure how you'd find something that met the requirements regarding ingredients, macro percentages, etc.
And price-wise, it makes Orijen look cheap, lol.
Just Food For Dogs is all custom made, home delivered meals. I don't get into those kinds of diets because they are just not feasible for the average pet owner. The cost is astronomical, and I for one would want to know I can have the food any day or time I need it; what happens if there is some type of transportation delay? Before most of us would buy this, we'd make our own food, which is always an option.
The Open Farm brand does make kibble, but the protein is even slightly lower than the other options I mentioned above, and the fat is slightly higher. The calorie content is also higher, which to me doesn't seem like a good choice since you are feeding a lower-calorie i.e. weight-loss style formula.
I can vouch for the sorucing on the Bixbi and the Open Farm brands. The Just Food for Dogs, I don't know. -

Okay, Just Food For Dogs does appear to make ready to eat meals that you can buy from Petco, for one, lol.
Cost, again, is astronomical. To feed a 60 lb dog, it would cost $55 for three days worth of food, or $555 per month.
Those store clerks sure picked some expensive options for you. -
