Oliver had a seizure yesterday afternoon. He is 8 years old and this is a first, it lasted about 1 minute, he was on his side, shaking terribly, lost control of his bladder and drooling. I tried comforting him during this but after his shaking stopped, he raised his head, still dazed and begin snarling at me. This lasted about another couple of minutes and then he recognized me. I brought him to my vet, he was so anxious and almost uncontrollable but she checked him out and did bloodworm and all is normal. He also had TPLO surgery 2 weeks ago and had his follow up Wednesday and all is going well with his recovery. The Vet cannot tell me why he had the seizure, there is no way that he could have gotten into anything as we have had him contained in a pen, bringing him out only to go to the bathroom. It was such a scary experience and I am terribly shaken up. My Vet and the Vet at the hospital he had his knee surgery have said that the seizure could not have been caused by the surgery and the only med that they are having me stop is Trazadone (anti anxiety). He is also on Garbapentin and Carprofen. I am worried sick and now I am afraid to leave his side :( He was back to somewhat normal last night and slept through the night. He seems fine this morning. Has anyone had a similar experience that you would like to share that may help me cope with this.

Nancy at this point it really is a wait and see. Hopefully it is the only seizure he will have.
I would prepare what I used to refer to as the "seizure" kit. An ice pack (frozen peas actually work well) and plain vanilla ice cream. There is some thinking that an ice pack on the dogs lower back during a seizure lessens the severity of the seizure. The ice cream is for after the seizure as the seizure can lower the dogs blood sugar.
If there are more seizures then you may want to have a work up done. Blood panels etc.. I would stay away from expensive imaging. In over ten years I have not heard of any testing that identified the cause of seizures.
If the seizures are more often then once every three months then you may want to consider medication. The first medications to use are phenobarb and potassium bromide. It does take awhile to get the correct dosage so patience.
