Why did your dog become a rescue or rehome?

There are so many situations that lead to giving up a pet. Some are understandable somewhat, some just don't make any sense at all. Since most of us here have a dog someone else gave up, we are getting the love and devotion they are missing. I'm sure your dog in some way says to you, " Thanks for giving me a second chance!"

I am really not sure why Jackdoodle was given up. The forms that the owner filled out at the shelter said that his job had changed & he had to travel. But the history also said that Jack had lived with an infant, a teenager, and a cat. So I don't know if there was a divorce and the husband got custody of Jack, or what happened. JD's specialist believes he was given up because of his medical issues.
Whatever it was, I'm sorry he had to go through losing his home, but I'm sure glad that his forever home is mine!

Gus was bought for a teenage boy. According to the father he wanted a dog for all of his life. When he finally was old enough to care for one, he got a doodle. He proceeded to "smoke pot and ignore the dog" so the father put him up for a rehome. And thats how we got Gus.

Bodi's family moved to the state of Washington where they are now living in a town house that does not allow pets. I think his former family was not home enough to love him. He was often in his crate or out in the yard for long periods of time. He now loves being loved. Yes, he is in the crate while we are at work but in the afternoons and evenings he is a big part of the family. We can't wait for the summer when we will all be home (two teens and my DH and I are teachers) we hope to get rid of the crate for good!

Budda was with a family who had two children age 10 and 12 who were looked after by a nanny. The nanny didn't want to look after him so they gave him to a rescue....poor guy. He is so cute and sweet and not hard to look after!! Thank God we have him now.

i LOVE this picture!
Connor & 5 sibs were taken from a puppy mill@ about 14 wks. Since they were over 8 weeks old, they were like "expired product" that pet stores wouldn't buy. Evidently 8 weeks is the magic number for selling puppies commercially. Fortunately, the puppies were not destroyed as in many PMs. He was so thin he looked like an afghan puppy -- you could count his ribs and his hip bones were very prominent. BUT...he never stopped wagging his tail.

Connor is like furry sunshine. He still wags his tail all the time!!!

The breeder was sick and ended up in the hospital for a while, so the dogs were older and went to the Humane Society. I think 4/5 months isn't older at all! We are very thankful for that Honey came into our lives.
She was quite skinny and ate whatever we gave her for 3 days straight. She calmed down considerably after a week of regular meals.

Wow, these stories all have happy endings! Lets hope theres more of these to go around :) Lucky was a rehome that just wasn't the " right fit" for the young family. Don't ask me, I'll never understand it. He has been a loving, intelligent, giving, faithful companion to my family. I don't regret giving him a home one bit. He has turned out to be the best dog I have ever owned and cared for.

I'm not exactly sure, but according to the rescue he was with a bad breeder in horrible, filthy conditions. He was 10 weeks when I went and picked him up from a rescue that had transported him from Southern CA, to the Bay Area. My guess is that he got too old, maybe he looked too much like a lab and not like a doodle, I'm just not sure. He was clean when I first saw him, and not really underweight or anything, but I'm not sure if that was the work of one of the three rescues he went through to make his way up North where it is easier to adopt out homeless animals. I have noticed that he certainly did not know what a collar was, and isn't even remotely trained. He's a little bit shy, but generally pretty good with what I've introduced him to. He doesn't like to go for a walk without our older dog, he tries to stop walking and go right home, so maybe he is more nervous than he is letting on, but thankfully the seemingly horrible breeder did not do too much damage, he seems like he is going to be wonderful!

Moose was a rehome. He was purchased for the wife by the husband as a puppy (as a gift). When he reached full size at the age of 8 or 9 months (and 70 pounds) the husband decided he didn't fit with their life style anymore and made the wife get rid of him. The wife was crying when we opened the door of the car and Moose jumped in. I would have put the husband up for rehoming.

Mica was adopted from the Humane Society and returned because she "bit" one of the people. It's a convoluted story, but we think she actually bit the person we train with when he was evaulating her for the couple. It probably freaked them out even though it didn't phase our trainer. We ended up with her and she's been a great dog. I have no idea why she ended up in the shelter to begin with. I'm guessing high energy and no training plus shedding equals shelter dog. You can see what a ferocious beastie she is from the picture.
