Just booked Toby's neutering..... :(

I just phone the vet and booked Toby's neutering. He's being "fixed" on March 5. I love this vet, but that doesn't mean I won't be nervous! He has to go in first thing in the morning, and then they prefer the dog stay overnight to sleep off the anesthetic. I asked if anyone stays with the dogs all night, and they said not unless there was something unusual happening. If all is fine, the dogs just sleep there. That way they don't feel the need to follow their usual house routines of going out, etc. As far as keeping him still, they told me to play it by ear - if he stay still, fine, if he feels up the walking, etc, fine. And also, they don't generally send the dogs home with a collar unless they won't leave the are alone. Apparently most dogs are fine without it.

I am not looking forward to March 5.

If there is not anyone there to take care of him I would bring him home.What if something did go wrong or he gets all stressed out being there all alone.

I know - I was having those thoughts too. But the nurse assured me that if anything was amiss, they would make other arrangements. I will be nervous, but I guess that is the norm.

Our puppy was spayed last week, took her in at 8 and picked up at 4. They only operated on her 2 and was pretty woozy, but slpet on her mat at home with one of us with her and this settled her. I would definitely say you want him home.

We lasted 2 hours with the collar, it was bugging her so much and it was like having a blind dog having to guide her round furniture! She has left the area alone.

We were also told to try water in the evening and only a small amount of food, Chelsea was so hungry she ate her nomal dinner, and was fine!

Okay - I have done a lot of research in the last day or so. I found that, in this area, some clinics have them stay over, with no supervision, and some send them home same day. I did, however, find what appears to be a fantastic vet about 20 minutes from here who is open 24/7, and there is a vet there all the time. They send dogs home the same day as their surgery for spay/neuter. If there are any problems - there is a vet there 24/7!! I talked to them on the phone today, and they sound great. I looked at their web site, and it looks great too. They seem to have a fantastic, clean, up to date clinic. They use lasers for surgery, which is better for the dog concerning blood loss etc. And to top it all off - they quoted me the cheapest price I've heard (which isn't a factor - I'm not looking to have Toby's surgery done "cheaply"....it's just a bonus) :). Anyway, I feel much better now.

Our girl was just spayed on Friday and we brought her home as well. She mostly slept but was ready to go the very next day. We have to keep her quiet for 10 to 14 days before she gets her stitches out. That was easier said then done. She has been running all over the house, we had to keep her contained a little bit more because she now has some fluid built up around the incision because she is being to active. Maybe this is different for boys. Our vet doesn't use cones either because they say it stresses out the dog. We just put on a shirt over her back end and knotted the end to cover her stitches up to help her leave it alone.

Toby has a fluid build up too. He's on antibiotics. We are at 8 days in our recovery period, and I do believe I caught him today pulling out what may have been his last stitch. We've kept him fairly inactive, but just today I've been allowing him off leash in the back yard. He's not really running around (if he tries I bring him in) but he's enjoying the freedom to lay in the sun! He loves it outside.

I thought they only kept girls overnight - not boys? At least this was my experience. I think him coming home would be fine?
