Male-When do they lift the leg

Sorry-but I have to ask. I had a male dog before and I remember the first time he lifted his leg to pee I was very excited but I forget how old he was. My Golden Doodle is almost 5 months old and hasn't even attempted this "big boy dog thing" Any comments on when they start to do this. Should they do this before they are neutered?

Hi Sandy, Our dogs seem to be in synch with their behaviours. Perhaps, in a few weeks, Thomas wil try this. Good luck with the neutering and pls let me know how it goes because we will be there soon. I am Not looking forward to this. My dog Buddy breezed thru this as though nothing had happened to him. Hopefully, it will go as well for our new boy.

Hi,
I just had a discussion with several trainers and lots of people with male dogs at our training class today about the neutering @ 6 mths old. I just posted a new discussion re this. I am worried now if this age is too soon. I'll be phoning our vet first thing Monday morning to ask about this because Thomas was going to have this surgery in about three weeks!

My Murphy is 16 months old now and still hasn't lifted his leg. He was neutered at 6 months. I hope he never does!

Max is 7 mths old and started lifting his leg about a month ago but doesn't lift it very high and still squats most of the time. He was neutered early so not sure if this makes any difference. We used to have a 3 lb Yorkie who started lifting his leg at 4 mths and sometimes lifted so high I thought he would fall over, actually that did happen one time during a tropical storm but he didn't have far to fall!! LOL

I have two doodles. One is a squatter and the other began to lift his leg at around 9 months. One is a year old and the other is a year and a half. The younger dog is the leg lifter. These two dogs are half brothers. They are as different as night and day- which is a pretty good thing on most days!

My older one does it about half the time the eleven month old never, so far.
