Toby had his neutering surgery one week ago today. The vet said to keep him quiet for 10 days. However....now Toby is feeling really, really good. He has a pouch of fluid build-up from his abdominal incision (hide and seek for the lost testicle), and is on antibiotics for that, but otherwise is feeling fantastic. So now being in the yard on the leash is not effective. He jumps up and down like he's on a pogo stick. I just wonder whether being on a leash is making him more liable to jump and pull than being off would. I just can't even imagine keeping him "quiet" until Friday.....
I'm sure it's going to be a challenge to keep him calm & quiet! Try exercising his brain to tire him out a bit. Have you played "Find It" or "Hide & Seek" with him? You can put him in a sit/wait in 1 room of the house & hide a stuffed Kong in another room. Release him & tell him to "Find It". There is also the "Muffin Pan Game". Take a large muffin pan & put treats in several of the holes. Put tennis balls in all of the holes, covering the treats. Put it on the floor & see if he can figure out how to get at the treats by removing the balls. Bailey kind of cheats & smacks the pan with his big paw, knocking the balls out that way! LOL! Good luck!
His one stitch site is completely healed. The other, I guess the one for the abdominal testicle, is not as healed. Plus he has that pouch of fluid which needs to drain. I was trying to hold off until his antibiotics took hold a little better - the vet said 3-5 days and we should see things clear up, and he started them on Saturday. I will be glad when this week is over.....
Try including some training sessions, practice all the stuff you learnt in puppy class. Not only will it get you ready for your next set of classes, but mental exercise can be just as tiring as physical exercise. Hartley still crashes for hours after going to obediance class! You can expand the 'find it' game by using small treats or kibble and hiding it all over a room, don't let him see where you put it though! Then help him at first by taking him towards the first couple of pieces and telling him to 'find it'. Hartley cought on really fast and now we just have to point around the room, tell him to find it, and off he goes hunting!! The weather is supposed to get warmer, so you might be able to expand your walking distance too!
Both my male and female were back to their normal selves and normal activities after 3-4 days. I was never told to keep them quiet for 10 days. Just not to bathe them for 10-14 days. They were back to playing and acting like their normal crazy selves though. Let him go...just don't let him over-do it.
We have been, cautiously, letting him off leash in the backyard today. It can't be any worse than in the house - he's been a raving lunatic all day. Jumping, chasing, and pestering me to death. He's got a week worth of energy saved up!
I let Lucca run. I just didn't let him play with other dogs for the 7 days. The night I took the cone off he proceeded to chew the glue off of the incision. He was ok, I had the vet check it. But running will definitely wear him out, at least I hope so for your sake. I empathize with you about the pent up energy. On Sunday it was raining so hard we didn't go out for our walks and Lucca was absolutely horrible all day.
Yes - yesterday we started to let him off leash in our yard. There is a dog on either side of us (we're fenced), so he wanted to get the zoomies, but I tried to control it. We had to have the vet check him on Saturday, and now he's on antibiotics for some swelling, but at that point, somehow, Toby had removed most of his stitches. It's amazing how quickly they rebound! It's been 8 days as of today - I would think we'd be good to go
