Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Lizzie is a 13 week old goldendoodle. Because I work nights and 12 hour shifts, I set up a large, secure pen in the basement for Lizzie to stay in on the night's I'm gone. Yesterday, she had little appetite, which I attributed to the stress of a new home. (I've had her since saturday) I put her in her pen with some puppy toys, food, water, and lots of newspaper; she was fine. I just got home this morning, and something's wrong. She has water for stools, is very lethargic, and vomitted what looks like saliva 3 times.
As most of you know, she has been battling severe anemia for the last month, but it was resolved, and she never vomitted with that.

I took her to the vet immediately. I'm crying. Vet thinks it's Parvo. She's in the ICU on IV fluids and antibiotics. Parvo test came back negative, but because it's an antibody test, early tests are often negative.

I need a hug

***3/6***

Sorry for keeping everybody in in the dark, but Lizzie is doing well and is HOME!! I picked her up at 8:30 this morning. They did end up having to re-start her IV fluids yesterday, but took them off this morning. (Well she kept dumping her water bowl and not drinking, because they hadn't put any toys in the kennel with her!)
We are now on a mixture of I/d A/d food with some of her dry kibble. I know it's not the best food for her, but it seems to be working and she has eaten all three meals today. She hasn't wanted to leave my side all day, so I am a bit sleep deprived (I worked last night). She had 2 soft stools today, but no diarrhea.
Overall, the vets question whether or not it really was Parvo, because she did make such a fast recovery. So I've been pretty worried if it wasn't parvo, then what was it? She obviously had some kind of bacteria and/or viral gastroenteritis since she spiked a fever up to 105. But the antibiotics are definitely helping.

She's snoozing at my feet while I type this and says a HUGE puppy thank you to everyone for their help and support. You guys rock!!!!!!!

****update 3/9****

I have had the last 4 days off of work and Lizzie and I have had some serious bonding time! She's my little buddy. She has been doing very well. I started to introduce the new Royal Canin puppy chow yesterday mixed in with the soft diet from the vet (less than 1/4 cup per meal). She was pretty tired yesterday and woke up this morning at 4am with vomiting and diarrhea! So we're back on JUST the soft diet (science diet I/D and A/D mixed). I've been feeding her multiple small meals today and she has licked the bowl clean on ALL of them. She's also been really energetic and happy after about 9am; no more vomiting or diarrhea. So given this, I'm starting to think she's having a bad reaction to the kibble. Have any of your dogs had a reaction this bad to food before? So we're on a search for a good chicken and rice based puppy kibble. Open to suggestions!
She peed on my uncle and aunt's carpet like 5 times tonight, so housetraining isn't going quite as well as I had thought. But, she won't poop in the house; she dances by the back door! So that's a plus.
Anyway, that's my update. I should probably start publishing this in blogs, so look for those in the upcoming week!

Thanks again everybody!

I just read your post that she is doing much better!!!! She MUST be on the mend now or they would not have removed the IV. She reacted VERY QUICKLY to the treatment because the couple I told you about earlier said their dog was in bad shape for almost three weeks, hospitalized, IV, and in an intensive care unit. She survived though with absolutely no side effects and is a healthy 10 month old s*** zu. This was a confirmed Parvo case. I still wonder if Lizzy has it-and if so-where did it come from? I am so happy to hear that she is doing better!! I hope you are too. Regards, Debbie
Well, they replaced the IV again, said she wasn't taking in enough fluids yet. But, I should still be on schedule to bring her home Friday. She's not near 100% yet, but hopefully strong enough to come home where I'll get to do feeds every 2 hours and nurse her back to health.
Hello Missi
I see your posts are from quite a few days ago. So sorry I didn't hear about this sooner or I could have helped you with some steps to do before you can get to the vet. I had what appeared to be a serous outbreak of something this summer when I had 45 young puppies here. With the information on this website I was able to turn around every pup but the first one in 12 hours or less. When they first got sick they looked 1/2 dead and in a few hours they started recovering. My vet clinic could not of course accommodate this many sick puppies so they made it known to me that I needed to do the care myself. About 1/4 of my puppies ended getting sick.
I am not suggesting this will ever replace vet care, I am saying it is something you can do immediately yourself before you can get to the vet. I keep many of these remedies in my cupboard now. Here is the website......it has a bunch of tea remedies that are fabulous for minor or serious illnesses. http://www.ambertech.com/parv/Parvo_Information_Self_Help_Guide.pdf main page is

Hugs from Halas and me to you and Lizzie. You got her into the vet right away, so that's great. At least they can treat her and keep her hydrated while they figure out exactly what's going on. You two have been through so much already! Hang in there, she'll pull through.
Hang in there. You and Lizzie are in our prayers.. Great big hugs from Lilly.....
Hugs to you both - and lots of prayers too...
I'm so sorry to hear your poor Lizzie is sick again. Fenway and I will be thinking about you and praying for little Lizzie to get better. Lots of hugs and doodlekisses.
So sorry hear about Lizzie.
Did they check her stool for anything else? Crytposporidia (which Murphy had at 8 weeks) or other stuff.
Parvo not being positive is good news.
You and Lizzie are in our thoughts and prayers.
Linda and Murphy
Yes, they did stool screen which was completely negative.
She has had 3 rounds of vaccine, but the vet said they weren't recombinant (sp?) vaccines, so since she could still have maternal antibodies, the classic standard vaccines would not have provided protection; and I've only had her since saturday, so all of her previous vet care was with another vet. She got her first one on 1/27/09. I did contact the breeder this morning, so she's waiting for and update and hoping it's not parvo. She has been dewormed multiple times, most recently panacur on 2/28, 3/1, and 3/2. Plus her stool was negative.

I just spoke with the vet, he said that she has stopped vomiting/diarrhea and is on LR with some potassium. He and his partner both agree that it is parvo, but that we're really early on. Her temp is 105 now, but her Kindey and liver function panels are normal. They say she's a classic case, but I know how parvo is often wrongly diagnosed. At least they're treating her as if it is parvo, because it's not worth the consequence of waiting.
The vet said I can come see her tonight, I just have to wear a gown and go through isolation procedures. He said she resting and doing well so far. We might have a fighting chance.
Lizzie has already proven that she's a fighter, so I think she'll pull through this, too. We'll be praying for you.
He didn't mention whether that was too much at all, just that the vaccines were most likely ineffective.

I'm trying to think positive, but be realistic about how serious this virus is for a dog as young as Lizzie. Luckily her H&H was normal on her CBC, so the anemia is still under control, and the rest of her labs are good. Dr. Skaer said that we might have caught it early enough that she might make it through. So I definitely am glad that I rushed her there as quickly as I did. No promises of recovery yet, but we have everything going for us that we can.

If she does survive, does Parvo have any lasting effects on dogs?
