I wrote the other day about Rosie's chewing everything in sight and appreciate all the wonderful responses. Her chewing continues and today I stopped at Petco and bought her a bone. What I need to know now is - did I buy the right kind. When you refer to sterilized bones what are you actually referring to? The one I bought is a beef bone with marrow wrapped in celophane. I gave it to Rosie a half hour ago and she hasn't stopped chewing on it yet. It's keeping her busy and she seems to really be enjoying it. Did I get the right kind? How come we give the kids everything and anything but worry about what we give the dogs..LOL.

LOL...does it look like this?

The strerilized bones actually say "sterilized" on the wrapper. If it doesn't say it, there's no way to know. If the bone you bought actually has marrow in it, I don't think that it could be sterilized since I would think the marrow wouldn't last through the heat of the sterilization. I try to stay with the ones that say it on the wrapper.
No it doesn't look like those but now I know what to look for Adina. I don't care what it is or what it looks like, Rosie has been working on it and nothing else foro the past two hours - everything else is safe. Let's hope it keeps her attention - I'll buy them by the truckfull.
We use sterlized bones. Sometimes I stuff them with treats. We get ours form White Dog Bones. If you look on there website you can there events that are coming up. We always keep extra on hand. They are great.
I keep refiling the bones with peanut butter. My guys love them.
We buy sterilized beef bones and they are often wrapped in celophane but they don't have marrow (they look like what Adina posted, but are larger and are not filled). We order from white dog bone company. The bones last forever. We have 2 sizes...the normal and the really large. Our doodles chew on them at least once a day.

Glad you found a solution :) Marrow bones are fine for them (as far as I know)...
Ok, now I am confused. I have been following this conversation and agree that bones are great. i was told and have read that cooked bones are very bad as the dogs can get small pieces off which can perferate their intestinal tract. You are all talking about sterilized bones-are they cooked? If not-what are they actually? I would like to get some if they are safe. In other words, how do they sterilize a bone without boiling it? Just curious
You can sterilize a bone by microwaving it for 30 seconds; I do it all the time. I'm not sure what method they use with the commercial bones, but I can tell you that you could boil a large marrow bones for several hours, and an adult dog would never be able to break it. (I used to give my poodle marrow bones that had boiled in a soup pot for half a day, and they were like iron.) The dog's teeth will break before the bone does. Those are the bones that carry the weight of a cow around, lol!
