I am new to the site and I am looking for some help with my son's new puppy! He is whinning day and night and last night I didn't as much as get a wink in! I fed him, watered him, walked him at 2:00 am and again at 4:00 am and still.....nothing calmed him! "Shadow" will be 6 weeks old on Wed. I have placed his crate in the bedroom with me. I have bought him lots of toys! He has been chewing on everything! I had a friend tell me to place a warm water bottle in a blanket in his crate and a clock. I am sure that a lot of this is seperation anxiety from his mother, yet ....even a pup needs sleep! lol. My son is 15 and has autism, this is what led us to getting "Shadow' a companion for my son. I am looking to get him trained for my son's specific needs. Until then......we are trying to make the best of the sleep-less puppy nights! Thanks!
I would not take him back to the breeder at this point!!! I think that would confuse him now and cause even more stress. All he remembers now is you and your son and what about your son!! He would be devastated to see his beloved puppy removed from his life even if it was for only two weeks. I think it is too late for this, shadow is yours now and you will have to deal with the consequences. He will need early socialization with other puppies, so as soon as he gets his last parvo shot(also think about the bordatella shot-for dogs who attend group classes, agility, obedience, etc) run to the nearest group puppy class. Your son and the dog will LOVE it and the dog will need it as he missed this process with his siblings. It sounds like things are going well, lots of puppies whine for a feww weeks when they get home-my sister had to sleep onthe kitchen floor with her lab for two weeks and he was 10 weeks old when they got him. To me it shows a senstive dog. Good luck and enjoy shadow-send pictures too!
This is such a heartbreaking story. I am so sorry that you are in this situation. Your puppy is too young to be without his mom and litter mates. As others have said the period between 6-8 weeks is VERY critical to your pup's development. What he needs to learn, can only be taught by his mother and litter mates. I don't want to scare you, but Shadow stands a good chance of developing behaviors issues related to missing this VERY critical developmental stage. If he were mine, he would go back to his litter. PLEASE do all that you can to help your sister steer clear of this breeder. Look for one that produces healthy and balanced puppies.
How sad that the 'breeder' would agree to let a 5 week old puppy leave the litter and Mom so early. This is probably illegal in most states. NO shots! With parvo as rampant as it is? Was the puppy wormed?
I can't understand why your sister would go to the same lady and get one of these pups. Paying for the puppy in full is no reason to let the puppy leave so soon. If you were afraid the dog would be lost/ mixed up with another/ whatever then you needed to leave and buy from a trusted breeder.
Get ready for a minimum of 2 years of chewing with your lab, once those big teeth come in it only gets more severe. Don't let the puppy chew on your son now, or this habit will be hard to break .
Good luck, I love labs. I don't love the backyard breeders with their insane practices ( like your breeder) that have helped over 20,000 labs to be in shelters and pounds across the USA.
Well.....my sister was the very one to take myself and my son with her to make a payment on her puppy with this breeder. Once there, my son met Shadow. My sister had already made her contract and was more than half way finished with her payments. She was informed of this breeder via the nurse's that she works with at her Hospital. Shadow has a playmate, his sister, Zoe. My sister and I both bought from the same parents and I asked for proof! I was upset with the breeder and let I her know. I also see the way Shadow and Zoe interact and it's a given. they are brother and sister.
I think that its important to remember that , just as no two children are alike...no 2 puppies are alike...my sister's pup stayed with the mom....and she whines more than Shadow ever did! She is plumper..and the breeder stated that she continues to allow the pups to nurse. I cannot change what the breeder chose to do while the puppies were in her care
. I do not plan on buying another pup from her nor anyone at this point in time. I simply wanted a companion for my son and I am sorry to of upset any of ya'll, this was not my intent. I needed advice as to how to manage his whinning and did take him to the Vet, as well, he has had his first set of shots, 2 types of wormer (strongid 2x's and Panacur3 days in a row) . I took him back during my break inbetween classes and the Vet put the Avid micro chip in.. I respect everyone's advice and opinions, However, I am not returning Shadow to his mom. I am going by what my Vet has advised me to do and thus far, IT'S WORKING :) No..not to ever worry..I will NEVER Reccomend this breeder to anyone!
So!!! I am ready to BRAG!!!!!!! Here's a picture of my Shadow with Zoe , his sister!
Not sure the first one will post so I added a few more!!!!!
Jane, you said it perfectly. What's done is done. Now the best life has to be made for Shadow - training classes is a must. He will get the socialization he so needs and the obedience a family needs.
