On Monday night, my grandson was on the back deck, we had dogs in the yard, it was about 9:00 pm it was dark. Tyler called me to come quick, when I got there I could hear water running, like a river over rocks, "white water" . Water was pouring past the back steps and into the dog yard. We quickly got the dogs in, and in 10 minutes the water was half way up my shin. Water was in the front yard, flowing into the back, I called the highway maintenance emergency number. It was an hour before anyone showed up , I called them 3 times. In the meantime the water is still pouring in, and more and more of the yard is getting flooded. I have 2 acres that run paralled with the highway. To make a long, frustrating story shorter, I called some friends, that came over. In the meantimes the highway maintenance person, arrived to assess the damage. He stood around and walked up and down the highway for a few more hours, while we waded through water, carrying out each dog in their crate, loading them in my friends pick-up and taking them to her place. Finally we were out of there. (here) In the meantime the water started going over the highway, now they felt they had a problem !!!!! They brought in more men and an excavator. We left to settle in the dogs, and get to bed. In the morning after doing the dogs, we came back to take a look, water was still flowing in. The warm weather caused a huge melt, and the ditches and culverts could not handle the volume of water, so the water ran into my yard and the neighbors. The neighbors did not evacuate.
Wed. the water had quit running onto my property. They discovered that the main culvert higher up the hill was plugged, they got it unplugged. The highways maintenance company brought me a pile of sand and some sandbags, so we filled them hauled them over to the front of the property and placed them along the ditch. We do need some more. Then we had rocks, and sand hauled in to fill the huge holes that the water had erroded, 3 fence posts are very loose, need more rocks.
Today is Thursday, and we are now moved back in, Still have repairs to do and more sandbagging, as the melt is not finished. We are exhausted and my entire body aches. We are all glad to be home, the dogs thought that they were on vacation. All of them are fine, even the litter of puppies are tip-top.
So I will be popping into Doodlekisses again. Lots more yard work and clean up, ahead of us. But it is good to be home.

Mother Nature is a powerful force.

Holy Cow!!! And with a litter of puppies on top of it. You sound so calm. Way to go!!!
Welcome back to DK. I noticed that you were not on line and missed your informative comments. So sorry this happened, but I am so glad that you, and the dogs are safe. What a great grandson you have to help you out like he did.
Ann, I am so glad everything is ok now - other than erosion holes and fences....etc. I am so glad that you were home and have a bunch of wonderful friends. I am surprised that the highway people didn't do more to help you. I guess you got your workout for the year!!
Ann,
I am so glad all of you are okay.
Murphy and I know about hurricanes but not THIS! I am sure the water was freezing!
I can't believe you had to fill your own sandbags. I am so sorry.
Oh my goodness Ann! I am so sorry for the difficulties this event has caused you but so very grateful you and the doods are safe and that your damages were not worse. Wish we were closer to lend a hand physically, I suppose that cyber hugs and strong shoulders to lean upon will be abundant, please free to drop a heavy load our way any time, we are always grateful for the opportunity lend an ear and a prayer. Blessings to you my friend! Be careful.
This is so scary, Ann! Has this ever happened before? Very glad you and your dogs are safe. Does your insurance cover the damages?
Wow! So sorry to hear that your going thru this. Where are you located? My house was flooded & then my canyon caved in. I've finally got a wall built in the canyon and succulants planted that seem to be growing. They are supposed to keep the land from sliding. The house Oy Vay! So I really feel for you. Glad your back. I'm in the middle of doing stuff like french drains for water drainage. And I'm on the top of a mesa on top of a canyon. Go figure! I wish you luck. I know its not easy. PUppy love from Joy & furry folk
