Has anyone driven alone with your young (8-week-old) pup yet (other than to pick him/her up)? I bought a Safety Seat Support Harness, but each time I attempt to put it on Emma, she fights so much that I wind up just holding her (obviously, I haven't yet driven alone with her). Any thoughts?

I have no thoughts but would like to no also , because my daughter will be leaving for college soon and I will have to drive alone also.
We just put her in her small crate....it has a plce for a seatbelt too. Buy the time she outgrew the crate, she was trained and well behaved:)
Hi

We just put our pups in a crate too. The 10 month old now is just in the back of the suv "behind bars", although sometimes the bars are in the wrong car and he stays in the back anyway. Guess he just got used to it.
My Van has a area that is like a well it is a touring van so I just might try that , my daughter can sit in the back if Willson is struggling he doesn't jump around in fact he just likes to lie down, if that doesn't work a crate would be the way to go
Thanks, everyone. I guess I'll have to get a small crate just for the car until she's big enough for the harness that will go in the back seat. Today, I just held her in my lap because my husband was driving, but obviously, I want to be able to drive with her alone.
When Rosco was that age...I had a small crate that just barely fit into my car I took him in. A crate keeps puppy safe and your car safe. Puppy can't potty or barf on the car's seats AND it keeps puppy from chewing up seat belts or anything else. When she gets a bit bigger a harness is great though!
At 7 months, Cealeach has just started being able to ride in the car without vomiting. The poor baby just couldn't go anywhere without getting car sick. This surprised me because our Masiff has always gone everywhere with us and we have never had a puppy that did not outgrow carsickness by the time they were a few months old.

We live in an area that has very twisting roads and lots of mountains with a lot of switchbacks, so the rides are pretty bad for her.

We still can't take her to higher elevations or she gets sick.

Since she has always ridden, in the very back of the SUV, with our Mastiff, she behaves very well, in the car.
Hi! My husband and I just returned from a 10 hour trip to NJ. Our 13 week old Goldendoodle went with us. We set her crate up in the car and she was great! We stopped several times. No accidents!!! Hooray. We filled her crate with her toys. She really surprised us how good she was. She slept a lot.
I began bringing Holly with me in my Honda CRV very early in order to get her used to riding in a car. She shared the back seat with which ever Maltese were elected for the ride that day. Now that Holly has grown larger, she will only ride in the back seat if there are no Maltese along. I have a soft quilt in the rear compartment and she is very content to ride there whenever the Maltese are with us in the vehicle.

Since it gets pretty hot in our area during the summer, we only bring our dogs on trips in which we either can bring them in to the store (Home Depot, Petco, etc.) or when both Judy and I are in the car. Then one of us sits with Holly and the Maltese while the other goes into the store or other location.

Friday nights are special for Holly. She goes with me to "Cruisin' Grand" which is a big car show held every Friday evening during the summer in Escondido, CA. Holly gets to walk among the crowd, get petted by them and also get used to a very crowded location with loud engine sounds and blasting music.
We just got a small crate for Willson and took him for a ride in it today he complained a very little we praised him when he stopped he got a doggie treat at the bank then we went to starbucks and he got his whip cream went to the park and had an awesome day I will see tomorrow how it goes We put a blanket inside of the crate I think when he is older I will get the harness for him
I think that pups, like kids, learn best from their peers. Soon after we got Holly we would take her for drives in the back seat of my CRV along with a couple of her Maltese buddies. She adjusted very well. But, then; Holly is generally a pretty mellow dog.
I used to drive alone with Bailey all the time. Bad idea. It finally took her jumping in my lap and putting her front paws on the steering wheel before I got a doggie seatbelt. It clicks right into the backseat seatbelt on one side and onto her collar on the other.
