What does everyone think about these. I was thinking about taking Remington to get fixed at one because the price of my vet is insane! But I'm worried that it is not safe and that they won't do a good job.

Generally these are a good cost effective alternative. Ask both the vet and the clinic about the exact procedure - how it is performed, the anesthesia, what type of stitches, Follow up care, etc.

There are a few different ways to perform either procedure.

Make sure you are comfortable with which ever one you choose but have it done.
My Vet participates in the Friends of Animals Neuter / Spay Certificate program. I paid $90 for a spay. You have to check with your vet to see if they are participating in the program. I will attach the website if you are interested. The website does say not to make an appt until you get your certificate... but my certificate only took about a week for me to get, and it took a month to schedule my spay.

I used Emancipet in my area for both my dogs. Shiloh was done in a mobile Emancipet van that came to our local shelter and Fenway I took to their permanent location. I had a great experience with both of them. I paid 49.00 for Shiloh's neuter and only only 5.00 for Fenway's (they had a special) and then they microchipped them both for an additional 15.00 each. It was really great. I know that for our area, local vets take turns spending a day doing these spay/neuter clinics. So, you are getting qualified vets who are doing a community service. Our experience was very positive.
Most SPCA's have programs for spaying and neutering with reduced fees, but they can tell you who the Vet is they have do the surgery and you can contact them and question them or stop by and see for yourself. Make yourself comfortable with the Vet who will do his surgery and ask them questions.....
Try contacting Jerry Flanders at 317 773 3232; he is in Noblesville, I have known him for years and his rates are decent. He is next to the Hamilton County 4H grounds and on the other side of the fairgrounds is the low cost clinic.

I will mention that the low cost clinic recently did a neuter and they basically butchered the dog, the dog was later dumped at First Friends K9 Training in Fishers, the owner had to have the dog reneutered to fix the clinics mess.
I'm planning on taking him to the low cost one in Hamilton County... I heard very good things about this one. However, I am very worried about it because I would never want Remington to be "butchered." I've heard that clinics like these don't take their time because they are doing so many. However, the vet I'm going to now... which I love... charges 350 dollars and even though I'm willing to pay that to make sure he has a good experience I would like to look into other safe options.
I'll also tell you that the sterilizaton for a boy is much less invasive and the recovery time is much less with boys than with girls. Neutering just doesn't involve as much as spaying. Shiloh was loopy from the medication for about 10 hours and then you could barely tell he had been through it. Fenway was fine from the minute he came home. Call the place you are thinking of using and tell them your concerns....see if the reassure you and calm your fears. I know the one we used was just as safe as going to my vet.
give Jerry a call or call First Friends for details on the other dog's issue post neuter at the Hamilton County Clinic.

I love Kurt Philips at Woodland Animal Hospital in Carmel but he is on the high side.
I've had my dogs spayed at these and never had a problem, but that was years ago. Now I"m taking my Goldendoodle Pup to one on Tuesday. It is called the Coalition for Animal Protection. They responded right away to my e-mail request for an appt. and gave exact locations instruction and pre-op instruction. So far very personal considering it will only cost me $50.00 You could check to see if they have one in your area. I know they do take care of a lot of dogs in one day, but and I had to wait over a month to get an appt.
The one we used was also very professional. I thought the whole thing was a very positive experience from the first phone call, to the girl that did the intake paperwork.....to the consult afterward where they tell you how everything went, and explained what to expect for the recovery time. They even called the next day to check up on us.
I was just a nervous wreck about the spay, because my cousin had a very sad experience with spaying her dog. ( I don't know if she took her to the low cost place or regular vet ) So, I chose to take her to the vet we have been going for years.
I don't think there is anything wrong with low cost spay / neuter clinic, but it was just for my sanity.
It did cost much more, but she has VIP pet insurance, and they reimbursed me $200.00.
$350 for a neuter????? That is more than insane! If you're nervous about a low-cost clinic, you should contact other vets in your area...I bet you can find a good one who does not charge anywhere near that much. Good luck.
