Has anyone discovered an effective mosquito-bite prevention method for dogs, other than spraying them with a human DEET spray ? My vet told me dogs can develop all sorts of neurological problems if they absorb too much deet, so I'm reluctant to use the spray on them. On the other hand, I'm tired of the scratching from mosquito bites and feel sorry for them for being bitten (plus the risk of getting the West Nile virus).
Our vet told us NO DEET whatsoever. I am interested to see if there is an alternative treatment because the mosquitos are just terrible this year here in Ontario.
In the late 1980s early 1990s a popular method was to use Avon's Skin So Soft which is a bath oil. At the time it was heavily advertised as a miracle and a safe alternative to chemical methods of mosquito repellent. I haven't heard about it since that time.
I would try to find more recent research about its safety and effectiveness though.
Castor & Pollox Play Dead Collars and Cedar Oil on a cloth collar have worked for me pretty well. Not so much on ticks but no flying buggies come around and no fleas. They smell nice too.
I heard that one way to get rid of mosquitoes on people is to stick a dryer sheet in your pants. Can you stick a dryer sheet in the collar? Would that work? I've never tried it one way or the other.
