Ok I may be idealistic but I personally have a problem with breeders who treat pups like livestock. I know some breeders have farms/acreages and whelp the puppies in barns or whelping shacks where the puppy continues to live until it is adopted. Now in the case the puppy isnt adopted until it is several months old it roams the land like a wild sheep with no house manners whatsoever?! I would not want to adopt a dog like that for fear it would be near ferel and not well socialized. Like taking a sheep or something home to live.Thats why I looked for a breeder that house raised the puppies and they were treated like pets. (Yes I verified this) These are pups not sheep. I love to see breeders that only pre-sell puppies so there are no 'leftovers' so to speak. But if there are extras they arent kept in an open barn left to wander the back 40 like livestock.

I would like to hear any comments or justifications regarding farming dogs. Just a footnote: I am talking certain Canadian breeders I have seen on websites, I am not referring to any breeder on this board because I dont know any of you - just like to hear what you have to say about this.

Thank you, I try! I just am not always very diplomatic. I am trying to be.
You see! I'm not the only one who think you are a hero, a rescuer hero!!
Not necessary, Lynne! You educate people, including me and that is way more important than being "diplomatic". When I went looking for a chihuahua for my best friend, I found that they have the largest number of dogs in rescue. Folk buy the "cute little dog" for their kids....the kids are not careful with these sensitive tiny dogs and get bitten. Tiny dog goes to rescue or kill shelter and no one wants them. SAD.
Regarding doodles, what interests me is what I mentioned this morning. If a doodle could be rescued from a shelter and used as a guide dog or service dog, I'd lean towards that. I want to provide dogs for such places (guide and service dogs, I mean). I do know that many rescues have been excellent therapy dogs, visiting nursing homes, hospitals, etc, but for service and guide dogs, it has to be a puppy. If I make any money off this endeavor, it will go back into the dogs. If I end up with a litter that doesn't sell, I will find excellent homes for them and spay my bitch.

Sorry for the length.....but please, don't worry about diplomacy when you're saving lives.
Hugs, Kathy
Thanks, Kathy. I do appreciate it, but I have been un-diplomatic in the past and I am trying hard to change that and be nice. : } See, it is possible to teach an old dog new tricks! Good Luck in your endeavor.
Today at the dog park We met another doodle. This doodle was bought on a bit of a whim at the pet store in town (Stratford) all they know is that the dog was apparently from a Mennonite breeder. They have had no issues with thier dog and are very happy with him
I think that at least asking the question to a breeder about where the off spring that don't get sold go to is a good idea. Ask the vet involved also. Anyone can lie to you but hopefully asking the question may help to read their answer on thier faces.

Amen!  I am very much against breeders who operate in such a manner.

My puppies are in my bedroom at birth and moved to my very large open family room or kitchen depending on where the majority of my time is spent at the time.

I could go on for days....

I was talking to my husband about something entirely different last night and he made a statement that fit.  There are those who do things correct, their prices are a bit higher and then there are those that cut corners, undermine health and sacrifice the end product (remember he wasn't referring to puppies but it fits- I hate seeing puppies referred to as a product) .  In the end everyone is always looking for the cheapest best price and most of the time that gets you puppies that have not been cared for properly.  This is going to get me on a new soap box so I will stop

I totally agree. I charge more for my puppies but you can't buy what I give in many places. Is probably similar fo U.  Besides all the testing & research into health issues plus 7 yrs of healthy puppies, I always give a puppy pick up seminar. This Saturday, most of the puppy parents & families, kids, grannies, nannies fly in. I spend about 6 hours training them on puppy training. As u've probably read, my puppies are all pottty trained & now due to Mr. mom, they have stopped puppy nipping. But all of that has to be kept up. that's why I do the puppy pick up seminar. I don't want my puppies to be speaking Greek in an English speaking household. Humans have to speak dog. Dogs have to speak human. & hopefully, we meet somewhere in the middle. For me training is communication. I have several copycat breeders of Giant Schnoodles out there. Problem is they may not be genetically & orthepedically testing. They may be using a Giant Schnauzer as the mother so dont' get the temperament that I originated in the breed. There's lots more.  I wish I had patented the breed name long time ago. Its too late now. I'm thinking I'll change the name to Joy Doodles. what do you all think?  I'll post pics as soon as I get my cpu fixed. If ur in San Diego this Saturday, & you want to come to the puppy pick up seminar & if there is enough space I may be able to include U. Pls email me at caringpro@yahoo.com Puppy love from Joy & Furry folk

One last comment then I am going back to folding puppy laundry : )

I love that some have caught on to the fact that "home raised" puppies is important.  I have seen some rather disgusting homes.  Walls lines with crates, crates stacked upon crates, filled with not one or two dogs but three or four.  Dogs in side rooms, hallways, basements, converted areas not meant for living.  Dogs living in crates vs in living areas with people, the live almost entirely in crates.

Which is worse to live outside or in a crate?
