At the moment we are suffering from hot weather with high humidity and to make Benny's life easier I bought him today a cooling collar and a cooling plaid.
How does that work? the cotton collar is filled with cooling crystals. You lay it for 5 - 10 minutes into cold water and the crystals will soak the cold moisture. To make it even cooler you can lay it then for 10 minutes into the fridge (not the freezer!!!! only the fridge). The collar dries afterwards really quick but you can also put it on your dog while still wet. The collar will hold the cool for a minimum of 2 days. Best thing to do is let it fill in the evening, dry overnight and put it on the next hot morning.
You close the collar with velcro so it is easy to adjust although it comes in different sizes.
Benny seems to like the collar a lot because he lookes really strange at me when I took it off after we came inside and I turned the airco on.
It also looks really stylish and you can choose from different patterns and colors.
The good thing is that even if the dog manages to destroy the collar and accidently swallows the crystals, they are no danger to your dog's health.
The plaid works the same but you can use it on long car trips or for a break on a hike so that your dog can lay down on a cool place. If the dog doesn't want to lay on it you can also use it as a blanket and put it over your dog and it will keep the dog cool. Same principle as a wet towel, but the plaid is dry and therefore easy for on the road. I use it for in the backyard because we don't have a lot of shadow there. If it is too hot Benny will go and lay on it immediately.
You should be able to find the products if you google it. As I live in Europe I cannot give a price indication for the US or a store where to buy it. But as the instructions are available in english as well I am pretty sure that you can find it as well in the US.
