There are so many situations that lead to giving up a pet. Some are understandable somewhat, some just don't make any sense at all. Since most of us here have a dog someone else gave up, we are getting the love and devotion they are missing. I'm sure your dog in some way says to you, " Thanks for giving me a second chance!"

That is a wonderful update about Mariner.
Charli

Charli was surrended from an Amish Puppy Mill in Ohio to a rescue at 9 weeks. She ws born with a hernia which made her 'damaged goods' and could't be sold to a pet store. This breeder must have some kind of heart since he chose to surrender her rather than kill her. He does that with alot of his dogs/puppies to this particular resuce.
We adopted her via Petfinders. I was on a plane to Detroit (then drove to Toledo) within 5 hours of getting the email that our application was approved! We came home the next morning to NJ.
She is full of spunk and vigor! She is smart - already knows sit & down both verbally and hand signals, wait (as long as her attention span will allow), walk nicely on a leash (without Samantha).
Samantha took a week (after taking our foster, Mickey, to his forever home) to start playing with Charli. Now they are the best of friends.
We are grateful to have her in our lives!
Beautiful little girl! Enjoy!
Holly was born in Ohio in October & came to Pa. to a family as a pup. Apparently, she was too rough w/their smaller dogs & had to be given away. Another family took her in this past April & they have 3 kids. She bite the 13 y.o. son (who has ADHD) twice. I don't mean to sound ignorant or judgemental but she was also wearing a shock collar when w/this family & it was the kind you control. I'm not sure if he could have been shocking her on purpose or being mean to her. The mother said he was hugging her & after he let go she bite him. Anyways, she needed to get rid of her. I asked Karen & Lucy what kind of dog Lucy was & next thing you know Karen calls me to see if we wanted a dog. So far, she's been loving & gentle w/us so I'm not sure what kinds of environments she was in. Hoping everyday gets better & better ;)
Sounds like this poor girl really needs an extra dose of love. Introducing a new pet into the home is always stressful for a time under the best of circumstances. This dog may need extra time and patience to find her place and settle into your family routine. Patience, kindness, gentleness and praise will be returned back to you in a loving, trusting relationship with this dog. Hang in there, it will be worth the effort! Please feel free to bring your concerns and problems to Doodle Kisses, especially this group for support. We all wish you the best with this new addition to your family. Lots of doodle kisses!
Kaiser was "free to good home" on Craigslist! When I picked him up, he was a backyard only dog, matted to the skin, filthy, and covered with thousands of ticks. He is 9 mos. old (approx.) so, huge, but untrained. They had a 7 year old that became afraid to go outside because when she did the poor bored and lonely (but huge and filthy) dog would jump on her. But these people had only had him 2 months. They said they got him from someone they went to school with who couldn't keep him because they traveled too much. There's some destruction caused by boredom issues, too, I imagine.
My brody was rescued by the Doodle Rescue and Resource Collective. They were told that the previous owners decided that "We're not dog people." Brody is 8 months old and the poor boy was so matted that he needed a shave.

My friend who volunteers with a shelter called Pets Alive in NY found brody on petfinder and emailed me his picture. I fell in love with the shaggy boy and contacted the DRC.

Today is my 5th day with Brody and he went from a fearful, submissive pup to a 50lb lap dog. He is so endearing. Last night I went to check on my kids before I turned in for the night and Brody was in bed with my son, all snuggled up.

A little birdie told me that Mr. Brody is over 100 lbs! We met at the dog beach a few weeks ago. I haven't seen him since the day I picked him up from the home of the 'we're not dog peoples' home. I can't believe that is 2 years ago! Brody is just a delicious doodle boy!

Bosco (now 85 pounds, but about 70 when we got him) was kept crated for about 20 hours a day for the first 18 months. I am not sure he ever saw another dog, but they obviously had someone to train him because once I started obedience classes with him, he was a star. And very eager to please.
A family with small children took him next, but by then he was angry, scared and needed to be on a special diet. The woman who took him couldn't leave him alone in the room with her children because Bosco would bite.
We got him after an ad in the paper said she was about to take him to a kill shelter because all of the non kill shelters were full. He was very difficult for the first 6 months - biting, barking, chewing. I brought in a trainer (mostly for me - I'd never had a rescue and spent too much time feeling sorry for him instead of making him feel safe). I no longer crate him - I leave him in the mud room where he has lots of room to stretch out but still feels safe. Bosco has turned into a great dog. Still has separation anxiety (it's funny though - I can leave the house if he's in his room and it's fine. If I am in the house, he is a velcro dog). No problems eating anything. I can take him to a dog park (he doesn't last long - after ten minutes he goes and sits by the car so I'll take him home). He seems to love obedience class, so we will start level 3 this winter.
Callie was left outside Dekalb Animal Shelter (a high kill facility) in the middle of the night. I don't know her backstory at all, but I can't imagine a circumstance that would leave people to abandon this exceptional animal at a kill facility. There are dozens of no-kill shelters in the Atlanta area that are easy to find. I'm thankful that the folks at Dekalb saw the potential in Callie (then Pen #310) and put her on Petfinder. I guess her previous owners hated being given so much love (yes, I still feel bitter towards these unknown people, even though their ignorance and meanness brought me my sweet little furry monster!).
Jax was taken away from his owner where he had been abused. I fostered him through DRC and he is now in his forever home with a wonderful couple in Virginia.

Nina, thanks for loving Jax and helping him find a loving home!
