My doodle, Brody, needs to take a pill. We've tried putting it in food, hiding it in treats, and placing it under his tongue. He keeps spitting this darn pill out! It's making us crazy! Help!
If you can't get him to take it any other way you need to place it waaay back on the tongue, then hold his mouth closed and stroke his throat for a few moments which helps with swallowing. Unfortunately your doodle doesn't know you well so be cautious at first. Calla is been on smelly antibiotics and this is all that works although usually she'll eat anything. You can follow this with a treat.
Wrap it in cheese, put into a piece of hotdog (make your own pill pocket), put it into a little scoop of peanut butter and put on the roof of his mouth. Wrap in a bit of ham, baloney, salami. Lots of tricks. The throw in the back of the throat thing never works here, but wrapped in something tasty always works.
I agree wrap it in cheese, a small piece, so no chewing needed. We give Mariner medication daily and the cheese works. It also works for our other two.
I use cheese, too. I take a chunk and buries the pill in it. Or I do the same with piece of meat, or cold cuts.
They never know that they took meds since they don't really chew them!!
Our doodles will eat just about anything so it's easy to hide pills for them to swallow.
However our border collie can find the pill in ANY treat and will eat around the pill. She's way too clever for her own good =)
What Clark does with her is use a pill plunger of sorts...not sure of the name but it looks like a fat plastic syringe and you put the pill on one end, stick it down her throat, push the plunger and then rub her throat with downward motions so it goes down and she can't spit it up. Works great every time!
Yes but I'm not sure where...maybe a local farm supply store, maybe PetSmart.. My husband has had his for a long time...Ill ask him when he gets home tonite.
I just looked online and it looks like Amazon.com has them listed as 'Pet Pill Dispenser'
