Figuring out the differences in coat types!

Could someone help me figure out what to expect with regard to coat type when the breeder says that the puppy will have a "flat" coat? I know that probably way elementary for you guys but I have no idea!! Thanks. Gayl

I think she has a wavy fleece. Calla does too but less wavy.

Lucy's coat looks very thick, is it? Does she shed? I love the curlier look, but our Marley sheds tons, and his coat is just like Lucy's. Murphy is more like Sam's and doesn't shed at all. It sure seems like there is just no guarantee with shedding is there?

No Sue there is no guarantee with that. And, yes her coat is very thick. And to tell you the truth, She has been a light shedder, but since I have changed goomers and she is now hand blow dried, she is not shedding. No lie, my old groomer bathed her, put her in a crate and had a drier attached to the crate and that is how she dried. Took FOR-EVER. Now the new groomer has some type of hand held drying that really gets right down to the skin when she is drying her and it seems like it is getting rid of all that under fur and, seriously, she does not shed now. My DH would always complain before about seeing hair "floating" in the air from her, but you don't see any of that now. WHAT A BLESSING.

Anothe eg. this doodle had a "flat" coat too at 8 weeks, but by feel you could tell it was fleece not hair. this pic is around 5-6 months.

Fur that sheds - more like a lab or golden retriever - whatever the parent dog is.

when a breeder refers to a flat coat it is generally a flat lab like coat that sheds.

I think the hard part is that there are so many breeders who are using such different standards and breeding practices. I don't know that all doodles fall into a specific coat type. I think as the breed progresses, we'll see more standardized coats.

My new pup has a very fluffy, fleece coat according to the breeder. I still can't gage the coats very well but I do know that my first doodle Luah has a wonderful non shedding coat that becomes quite "wooly" as it grows out and she started out looking a lot like my new puppy so I am hoping that the pup ends up with the same coat as Luah's. Actually the picture of the fleece pup above is what I am thinking my little Sydney will look like in a few more months... I don't mind the extra grooming as a trade off for non shedding!
