Above it the link. It was a lot to copy and paste but still a quick read.

It covers ethics, finances, and pet insurance among many other topics related to pet health.

I have a dilemma finding a good vet as well. I have done a lot of research on the different clinics in the city where I live. Four out of the five vets that were actually reputable and had a nice clinic were 65+ dollars just for a visit. The vet that lived in my home town, and started out as a farm vet is a great guy, but charges 76 dollars just for a check up. I really do want to take my dog to the best vet possible, but to be honest, I can't afford it. My husband and I are both in school, and we cannot afford to pay 80 dollars every time we are not sure if there may be something wrong. I have already called my vet three times since we got Darwin, with pretty simple questions, and the receptionist wouldn't even hand the phone to the vet. She told me they don't answer any questions unless you bring them in for a check up.

Our current vet charges 40 dollars for a visit, and it's a clean facility. The vets are helpful but they really don't show any kind of affection for my dog. I realize they are around animals all day, but the way handle Darwin you wouldn't guess they even like animals.

I am looking into pet insurance now, but the balance between quality and affordability is a tricky one.
Wow, I can't believe what your vet charges for an office visit! I thought my vet's $26 charge that is tacked on to any visit was ridiculous. I have used my share of vets from the country doc to the urban clinic and I see advantages and disadvantages with both. The country doc is cheaper and has lots of time for you when you go there but their diagnostic equipment is sub par ( their xray viewer was no better than a light bulb). The urban clinic that I am currently going to takes my dog in the back to weigh her and take her blood etc. which I don't like. I asked to go back with her and they let me though, reluctantly. Now that I have my new pup I am going to try another vet. This is a large urban clinic but the vets have a great reputation. We'll see what their costs etc. are. I mentioned them to my breeder and she had used them in the past for fertility issues and she lives over 3 hours away... The bad news is vet service can be very dicey, the good news is there are a ton of vets to choose from!
