About Me:
My partner and I recently moved from a beautiful Alberta acreage to a house in the mountain city of Kimberley, BC.
Watching the sunrise over the rockies every morning is a spectacle that always stops me in my tracks. I don't think I'll ever stop hearing the word 'wow' fall out of my mouth.

I've been sort of a Jill of all trades. I had the good fortune of having a grooming apprenticeship handed to me on a silver platter about 10 years ago. I thought I'd won the career jackpot! The best thing was having the opportunity to work with those who were labelled 'difficult' clients using Tellington Touch and Reiki. It proved to me that patience and kindness are paramount in grooming. In my hands, those 'difficult' pets weren't living up to their reputations. My teacher was actually annoyed by this. My employer complained that I wasn't keeping up to their fast schedule. As far as I was concerned, I was there to serve my four-legged clients needs. It was a real eye-opener into the grooming business. Choose your pets groomer carefully.
Unfortunately, a few months into my training I began to react to some of the clients. I even tried to groom while wearing goggles, but my reactions were getting worse. I had to stop. But the new addition to our family is certainly going to make use of some of the skills I learned.
What Type of Doodle(s) do you have? What are their names? Tell us about your doodle(s) or any other pets you have!
We have just recently welcomed into our little family a Bernedoodle pup. We have named her Yarrow. She is growing like a beautiful weed, 10 weeks old and already 16" at the shoulder. Her mother is a 60lb Bernese Mountain Dog and her father a standard poodle. She is the apple of my eye and new baby sister to our big, gentle golden retriever cross who will be 13 in December. He is Sadhu, the best mentor ever! It does my heart good (and his) to see him play. It's been a long while since he lost his (and my) beloved canine companion of many years.
There are also two cats in the house. Cobweb and Blossom are not siblings, but both are 5 years old. Cobweb's nose is a bit out of joint but Blossom doesn't mind Yarrow. Blossom is an unusual girl though. She has dog friends in the neighborhood who she likes to visit. Our boy Cobweb is a bit of a lone wolf. FAST FORWARD TO 11 MONTHS: A miraculous turn of events! Now we have adopted a bernedoodle who is Yarrow's actual sister from the same litter. This is her 4th home and she is terribly timid, but every other day we notice some little improvement in her trust and courage. The sisters love having each other to play and sleep with. We have named her Shiloh because it means 'gift' and she is one! It also means 'peace and abundance' and that is her life from now on.
Where did you get your doodle(s)?
Breeder, Rescue
Why did you choose a doodle rather than another breed or mix?
We fell in love with the Swiss Bernese Mountain Dog, and have a friend who's Swiss wife has been breeding them for years. But the lifespan of this beautiful, gentle breed is so short. Then I happened upon, quite by chance, the Bernedoodle. She should have a longer life with us and perhaps, only perhaps, she will be low shed.
After years with our big golden x boy, who sheds 365 days of the year, less shedding would be a welcome thing. Only time will tell.
What are Your Favorite Things to Do With Your Doodles?
Here in Kimberley we have hundreds of miles of nature trails. That's what we like best. And going down to the center of town for coffee, lemonade or gelato and watch all the tourists enjoying this quaint alpine town.
Does your doodle(s) shed?
Nope!
Who grooms your doodle(s)?
me

Yarrow is just shy of 12 weeks now.  She'll be three months on December 10th.  My hands are so sore from all the mouthing and yesterday she broke the skin and left a bloody little gash on the back of my left hand.  I was putting her leash on.  There was no intention or effort on her part, just an open mouth and razor sharp shark teeth.  Anyway that's not news.  Here's what's new.

I've just joined the group Training - Experiences and Mindsets.  In the discussion, Lucy and Annabelle's…

The Bernese Mountain dog was originally bred to pull the carts of the dairy farmers in the Swiss mountain towns and villages.  Yarrow's mother is a Berner, as they are nicknamed.  I can tell that the drive to pull is quite strong in Yarrow.

Here in the mountain town of Kimberley, B.C., it's not possible for me to go anywhere without having to go uphill one way or the other.  That includes a simple trip to check the mailbox at the front of the house.  I instruct any deliveries to the…

Yesterday was a busy day.  After having a decent night's sleep, the weather was a bit warmer and I took Yarrow and Sadhu to walk around town.  We were gone much longer than planned, stopping and chatting with others walking their dogs.  Yarrow is quite timid around strange, large dogs.  She sits behind me with her head between my legs, as if my legs are fence boards she can safely watch from behind.  It's good for her to just sit there and experience the calm exchange of conversation after…

I have had some of the most wonderful dogs through my life.  I was always the woman in town with the one dog who was so well behaved, I was discouraged by shop owners from obeying the 'no dogs allowed' sign on their doors.  And, I've raised three children.  Lots of experience!  Never, in my wildest imagination, did I think I would have such a difficult time with a puppy. Even my beloved Basset Hound who used to eat EVERYTHING including the carpet, seemed easier because she wasn't always…

Thanks for the info Deb.  l know what you mean about busy (especially when you get a lot of company).  Ours just left Sunday - and I jumped up and down (and they were easy keepers)!  Looking forward to an update on Shiloh in 30 days - I bet she will be so much better.  Take care, L

Deb ~ I really applaud you for taking on Shiloh and it is just the best scenario for her I would think.  She will regain her spirit and learn to be confident by just hanging with her sister and loving people.  I do not understand what people are thinking when they get these wonderful dogs and proceed to ignore, etc.  Very heartbreaking.  May I ask why your breeder decided not to continue to bred Bernedoodles?  I did not see a bernedoodle until after I had both the boys.  Charlie and Beau are Australian labradoodles and they have the same father, but different mothers.  I think the bernedoodles are very cute and I was hoping my daughter and SIL would get one next year.  They lost there malamute last year.  They love the really big dogs.  Charlie Brown weighs 39 lbs and Beau is about 45 lbs, both are considered medium ALDs. If I had a larger doodle, I probably would have only had one.  Charlie is a people lover and Beau really is a little more standoffish.  The last 5 day we have had a white mini goldendoodle (38 lbs) visiting. His people are picking him up today.  Beau is exhausted from all the play!  Charlie just ignores these two unless they are playing too loud, and then he scolds them.  Really very funny - he is like an old grandpa!!

Hi Deb ~ I saw your post in Puppy Madness group regarding Shiloh.  I am so sorry to hear Shiloh's first 11 months were so difficult.  Thank goodness you heard about her in the nick of time.  It was such a sad story you posted, but it makes me smile to think that she now has a wonderful forever home where she will get lots of love and a real sister!  Please give us updates on her progress.  She is a beauty!

The sheepadoodle that I am talking about is a mix of OES (Old English Sheepdog) and standard poodle - in this case a phantom standard.  I had a F1b phantom goldendoodle (goldendoodle/phantom poodle) and he was the most fantastic dog.  Beautiful coat and no shedding.  He was so soft and did not mat.  Loved that dog but he passed away in  February.  Take a look at the photos on my page to see him.  The same breeder is now experimenting with sheepadoodles.  She is in Washington State.

I am definitely considering a sheepadoodle in the future so your comments regarding your bernedoodle were very interesting.  I am also going with a very experienced breeder who has her breeding stock now but going through all the testing.  It will be a while before I have a puppy.  There are other breeders of sheepadoodles, but I want the experience of my breeder.  I did get another companion for my ALD while I am waiting for a sheepadoodle because he definitely needed a companion.

Thanks for your response Deb.  I tried to get the boys on Acana or Orijen originally and neither of them will eat it.  They seem to both the love the rabbit, so I think I will continue for the 12 trial period and if that does not work, I may try the NOW.  Thanks

Deb ~ I just sent you a friend request.  I was reading a discussion concerning itching and you mentioned that a chance of food had helped Yarrow.  May I ask what you were feeding initially and what you feed now.  Our Charlie has never had issues, but Beau has frequent itching and some yeast in ears.  I keep his ears cleaned, but the vet wants to put him on a RX food.  I am in the processing of switching from Wellness Core (which is chicken based grain free) to Nature's Variety Instinct Rabbit grain free.  I am wondering if maybe Beau would benefit from a grain product.  I am at a loss.  It is so hard to figure out this issue.

Oh, I know we will have a companion for Harpo before long.  Today we are going to the pet therapy swimming pool for the boys to have a swim and a bath.  And, yes, they age so quickly when their companion is gone.  Have you ever read the book "Where the Red Fern Grows"?  It is about dogs and loosing a friend.  It's a kid's book but one of my favorites.  Grab a copy if you have not read it.

I will try again (computer problems).  That is Groucho Too, my goldendoodle, who died of cancer in February.  Still trying to find another dog as a companion to Harpo.
