Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

We have been wrestling with the thought of a doodle friend for some time. It would, of course, be so much easier if Clifford could talk but since he is keeping silent we are forced to make the decision for him. There happens to be an awesome doodle in foster right now so decision time is at hand. How did anyone else decide two doodles were better than one? (Can you tell we only have one child too?)

I can't say if 2 doodles are better than one, but every time we have a foster doodle Harlow has a blast running and playing with them. I have always had at 2 dogs my whole life, so I am not sure what it would be like to have an "only" dog.
I really love having two Doodles. I went through all the questions before we got Murph....would I have enough time to give two all the attention they need?; would I be able to love the second as much as Guinness?; would they get along?; would Guinness be jealous, and on and on. Adding Murph to our family was the best decision ever. We love him to death, and I don't find it takes much more time taking care of two. They are truly bonded, and they play together all the time. That said, it is a little more expensive (food, vet bills), and it's much harder keeping my house clean (Murph has a tendency to "attract" dirt, but who cares - he's worth it). I'm having trouble actually coming up with "downsides". So, this has been my experience....we LOVE IT!
I was so unsure for a long long time. Welly (my first doodle) was generally a good boy but could have very naughty moments and I didn't want a second dog to pick up his bad habits! Welly LOVES other doodles - so I was sure he would like a friend - that part was easy.

And - it has worked out really well. Bingley is now 5 months and they love eachother. They play together so well, and neither seem drawn to other dogs when we are out because they play with eachother.

Yes it is more expencive. Yes the house needs cleaning more frequently as they dash in and out when playing and bring some of the garden in too! BUT - the puppy is never bored as he has his uncle Welly to play with, so in that sense it's alot easier the second time around.

I don't regret double doodles. We have so much fun together, and now our 'family' feels complete...

I have never had two dogs before, until Fudge and Vern. I had all the same concerns as everyone else and I have to say Vern's transition to our home was the easiest one ever. They play so well together and really seem to love each other. For our family it was a great decision.
Our family was not complete until we got Bandit. I just knew we needed another. I hounded DH for months about it. I actually always felt guilty that we didn't take Rosey's brother Stubby home too with us. But things happen for a reason and I wouldn't change a thing now. Besides, I wouldn't have Sunday mornings like this, the couch may seem kind of empty
This is what they are doing right now

HA! I found this one in my file too, this is the day we brought Bandit home, as you can see they've grown very close

I love that picture of the day you brought Bandit home....how things have changed.
Hysterical. Love the Before and After :)
Don't you love the comparison photos? We have taken 'in the RV doorway" photos each summer since we got Ned and it is so fun to see how they have changed.
You know how I feel about it, Kim!!!! : )
We only have Darwin right now, and I have done a lot of thinking about this question. My concern, what if we are messing with a good thing? What if we have a great dog, who fits us so well, and our new dog isn't like that? What if the new dog causes problems, and doesn't fit us as well? But I think that is just silly worrying on my part.

The fact is, I have always wanted two dogs. I think they enjoy each other, they love playing together, they have someone to keep them company when we aren't home, etc. And two seems like the perfect number to me. DH and I have already decided we will add another dog to our family. As soon as we have a bigger apartment. :-) No room for two doodles to play. Good luck in your decision!
I think it's both. I think it IS messing with a good thing...and I think there are benefits. So with JUST Rosco...it was almost like I didn't have a dog. He is well behaved, relaxed, demands nothing but to be fed (preferably an hour earlier each day) and given some love. But he also layed around like a mop...which didn't in any way mean he was unhappy. Even high energy adult working dogs tend to lay around doing nothing when they are not working. Dogs like to chill. BUT...I couldn't give him as much exercise as he needed and I think it is good for him to be made to exercise by playing hard (burns way more calories than the 30-45 min walks I taike). And WE wanted two dogs. So it does 'mess up the applecart" but not necessarily in a bad way. It does make traveling a bit more complicated (I had hoped we'd get to go on a trip with just Rosco but then we got Boca) and for us almost impossible to take both dogs at this point on long road trips. But we have a GREAT dog sitter so I don't feel bad leaving them behind because they get lots of time to play and hang out in their own home.

I think either one or two is perfect...more gets tricky and requires a lot more time.
I don't have two doodles, but getting Peri was the best decision we have made. Taquito loves her and is healthier and happier with her here. I will never only have one dog again. If you can afford it (time and money) go for it.
