I had such a hard time naming our doodles. DH and I had our childrens names picked out while we were dating, so we never really agonized over it like I have the doodles. Then one day I realized I could change the dogs names anytime I wanted, as it's not like they have a Legal Birth Certificate or anything. Or I'd have to go to Court to get it changed.

I am seeing SO many dogs named Bella and I have never been the type to follow suit just because it was popular in anything. It bothers me a tad that it is so common. Who knew?

I think she would come to just about anything I called her. I tried "Come here Doggy" the other day and she came.

No, I wouldn't name her "Doggy" but you get the point.

So I am just tossing around some new names but do you think she'd have an identity crisis if I were to change it? Would she even care or notice? Just a thought.

I dont think she would notice, Cooper has many nick names and comes to them all. every so often ill call a random name and she still responds
I think Bella would even come to "Leave it" if I called it with "Come". She probably thinks that is her name anyway.

I think she'd adjust pretty quickly honestly. I think the name Bella is getting so popular because of the twilight books... LOL.

I used to think it would be fun to change Darwin's name every year, just because there are so many names I like. Honestly he answers to his name and about 12 other nicknames, so I don't think it would be a big deal. But now I've had him for so long, I can't see him as anything but Darwin!

Besides Camilla, Darwin is such a clever and unusual name. And he does just look like a "Darwin". The tearing up of the Bible certainly attests to that.

In my (humble) opinion - she's your dog, you gave her the original name, you have every right to change it.  Of course, this comes from a person whose name was changed, with fresh documentation and all.

What are some of the alternatives you're thinking about?

Nope - I love Rooney and Stuart's names, wouldn't change a thing.  This coming from someone whose first name was never used by her parents - they have always called me by my middle name.  Real pain in the butt for legal reasons.  Even Jane was so common at a time but did that make me common - I think not - lol.  Your Bella is one of a kind!

Yes, this is so true Jane. She certainly is.
I just can't even imagine Guinness or Murph having any other name.  Their names and their personalities seem to be totally in sync to me.  But if that were not the case, I'm sure that changing the name wouldn't be a problem for the dog...they'd get used to it pretty quick.  Rescues have their names changed, and that never seems to cause an issue.
Jack was 14 months old when I adopted him and changed his name, and he never had a problem. Name changes are very common for adult rescue dogs, and they just seem to understand that (newname) means them.

I would think that would be a common practice. Never thought of that

Porkchop the pig's name was changed to dinner.

You were talking about doodle's.  I thought about changing Clover's name since she was a rescue.  But realized she was lucky like a four leaf Clover and we were her fourth home.  DH likes to call her Cotton, Cottonball or Q-tip and she comes running.
