Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

I've recently been doing some pretty hard studying for an exam to finish my Nursing Degree and after a loong day at the library or after work I come home and notice myself burying my head into Bailey's coat and sniffing it all in! LOL.. something about her scent is so calming.  When we first got her my family commented that she smelled like Honey and honestly I thought she smelt like sweaty sock. But now, THATS ALL I CAN SMELL!! She gives off the wonderful aroma of honey and I love smelling her! (Weird, I know!!) Even after coming in from playing in the snow, after she dries off.... Honey!

So I just wanted to do a fun discussion on whether or not your Dood has a unique smell? I can honestly say I've never smelt a friends or family members dog and been like MMmmm, so maybe I've just gone crazy, or maybe its another thing that is yet, unique to Doods!

For those of you who give glowing reports of how wonderful and unique your dog smells... I'm not sure if you are

a) In denial

b) Outright lying

c) WAY lucky and I have the only stinky doodle on DK!

When I bathe Darwin he smells like shampoo for about... a week. After that he smells like a stinky beard. So when I hear people saying that they only wash their dogs 3 times a year and they still smell as beautiful as a rose... I'm baffled. Darwin gets bathed every other week and doesn't even play outside as often as many of yours. But he can be one stinky pup! Tell me your secrets, PLEASE!

I bathe my dogs twice a year. They do not smell like a rose. But they certainly don't ever stink although occasionally, when damp they smell faintly doggy til they dry. Usually they just smell okay. But they have no beards, cause I don't like them. I also trim them around the more possibly pungent ares, clean their ears every couple of weeks and wipe any area in need. They get routine grooming care as necessary. People complain about stinky beards. I wonder why not try beardless?
I don't know, I've never considered it. It might be a good option because although I regularly clean his beard (every few days) it reeks.

It might be a puppy thing too. I have no idea how he'll smell when he's an adult but for now even when he doesn't get a bath he smells good...or maybe the rosemary masks his stink ;-)

I also wipe his behind when he goes potty and wipe his beard when he drinks water so it doesn't stay wet. I don't know if that helps.

Wiping the beard after drinking probably does make a big difference. I'm kind of lazy so I don't do this with Darwin. Maybe the moisture sitting around in there is what is stinking.
I'm with you F...no beards!  But my Gracie gets so dirty because she runs in the brush in canyons and goes in huge dust bowls in the canyons.  You will find a fine dirt ring on the floor around where she has been sleeping if I don't bathe her.  She also likes to run in water and creeks when we take her to the mountains.  She is always a muddy mess by the time we get her home.  And, at the beach she is loaded with sand that does not just shake off when she dries.  How do you do it???  Yes, I am also always trimming the fiddley bits and face and cleaning the ears regardless of when she has baths.
I'm probably one of the DKrs in denial.  Murph's beard does usually stink (although I've been doing the baby wipes cleaning more often), but the rest of him smells great!
Sorrry Camilla, I "m in the C category. Quincy doesn't smell at all, his feet occ get that frito smell this time of year when they get wet often but other than that nothiing. I only give him a total bath every couple of months and then not because he smells just because I think he should have one. I wonder does it have anything to do with the food they are on, It would be an interesting poll to do. My DH in telling people about the doodle usually leads in with "he never smells" quite the opening don't you think.

Poor Camilla, I think you might have the ONLY stinky doodle on DK!  LOL. I would think not, but I have to say the 4 doodles I come in close proximity to all the time do not stink. My two don;t, our daughters doesn't and Murphy's brother doesn't. There is a little scent when they get wet and sometimes in the heat of the summer I get a scent, or after a hard day at the dog park, but that's from the other dogs mostly because it does not smell like their normal smells at all.

I was washing frequently, like once a week, not so much now as it is so cold and we filled in a very dirty area with rocks in our yard, so they are not running threw dirt so much.  I use a non-soap shampoo, they get EPO and Fish Oil everyday and I brush a few times a week. They smell like fresh air most of the time. Kind of non-descript smell, but I know I can lay my head on them when in bed and just enjoy their scent! I am sorry Darwin smells, I go with trimming the beard as I have heard that helps from many in the grooming group. But you are right, he does look good in pictures!!!

Hello, our names are Webster and Charlotte and we are dirt-aholics.  Our mom says we stink too.
I love that....dirt-aholics. I have one too.
Vern's nickname is Pig Pen, so that should tell you how he smells :) Fudge definitely has the better smell of the two, but she has her moments too. I love how they smell the day I have them groomed, but it only lasts about 3 hours with Vern.
