Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

I was just wondering if there are any other labdood owners that have one who gets extremely excited, cries, whines, and jumps on people when they come to the house?  He's a great dog, but I have never seen a dog so excited over people coming over.

Oh yes, both of my Doodles did this.  It took lots of training to teach them how to react appropriately when people come into the house.

yes, Cooper is like that. We have taught her not to jump up, but she will still stand on her back legs and give "hugs", but its more gentle. She gets so excited its unreal

Pretty common.  Obedience training is what will fix that.

Riley gets very excited too. He now doesn't jump but does huge amounts of butt wiggling.  He knows that if he is not calm then he must go to his crate and wait until he calms down.

Rooney and Stuart both go WILD.  They wag themselves so hard, grab toys to bring you - the whole nine yards.  It is an ongoing training challenge for us - Stuart like to put his paws on people and stand up - so we are working to keep him "OFF".  We now tell people to ignore them totally when they come in - not even eye contact.  This is working.

Bailey did the same thing...We put her leash on her and put her in a down stay and everyone is to ignore her until she is calm and  "free".  I do have to say it is really working.  the only person we have a hard time with is my mom.  Bailey gets so excited to see her grandma that she will go into a down-stay and then does this crazy combat crawl until she reaches my mom.

It is funny and it's gonna take a little more work with grandma hehe

This is what our Springer does. He gets the others hyped up and then they do it also.  If our Springer is gone, our doodles greet us much, much, much calmer.  There are ways to train to curb these greetings.  We can work on it when we are inside the house, but can't seem to curb it when we enter the house.

Oh, yes!  This is an ongoing training.  Trav has pretty much learned not to jump up on people, but he jumps up on the couch beside the door, or sometimes the table on the other side.  Most of the people coming into the house now work with us on the jumping issue.  He'll also grab a toy and run like crazy.  They're so cute when they're all excited about guests, but it isn't a welcome thing for most people.

Camus never jumped on people, but I got him when he was past the puppy stage and he was also afraid of people,so a special guy.  However, my son and DIL have 2 dogs (not doodles) and they both greeted me by jumping and lots of excitement, so the rule was I was to ignore them when I arrived and wait until they settled down before greeting them.  The rule worked, they eventually stopped jumping entirely.

Jack was 14 months old when I adopted him, and never jumped on anyone either. But just to reinforce that (because at his size, he could do some serious damage if he jumped up on anyone), when I came into the house, I always ignored him until I had put down my purse & any packages and was seated at the kitchen table. Then I calmly called him over. I also told all visitors to ignore him when they first came in.

OH YES!   And, my dog passed has had 3 years of training, awarded his CGC, and still, we totally stink at front door greetings. We just don't get that much company to train with this one.  Don't give up. Keep working.  My thoughts, when my dog gets old enough and he can't jump--we will have it perfected.  But until then, we are a work in progress

Oh god I'm so glad that other people have this problem with dogs that are not considered puppies anymore.  We have worked so hard with both our doods at greetings, but they still get unbelievably excited.  We trained ours to grab a toy so they don't mouth our guests, but they still go crazy...my little one is still in training for jumping...my big guy doesn't jump (thank god because he is 90 pounds) but just his movements at that size are dangerous lol.  I seriously don't have guests over unless my husband is home because I physically can't control them without him.  It certainly is ongoing training for door greetings...and I'm so relieved that I'm not alone in this!  =)
