Is anyone using Nexgard, oral flea and tick preventative? Opinions anyone?

Our Vet recommended Nexgard for fleas. It's made by the makers of Front.ine, but is a beef flavored pill. Same coverage for fleas and ticks, for 30 days. Wanting to try as the topical presents a problem in the summer with dogs swimming several times a day. Anyone have and insight into this new product?

Nancy, I never had that issue w frontline and don't see it w Nexguard . I do give them fish oil and use conditioner when bathing, so not sure if that is why I'm not seeing it.

I never had those issue with Frontline  and we are not having any issues with Nexgard.

I have used Frontline, Advantix and Nexguard, and have not seen any skin issues whatsoever.

Lexi is doing great on Nexguard. No skin issues until hayfever kicked in. That's normal for her. We haven't found one tick on her yet (knock on wood), but I know it's not a repellent, so it may just be good luck.

I give the boys EPO already.  Ned has one of those ' high maintenance' doodle coats that needs no excuse to mat, but it is much worse after applying Frontline. Oh well, it was worth a thought.

I think it's worth a try for a month or two if you can get Nexguard easily nearby. It might not cause the same problem??!!

Debating on whether to start with Nexgard. Sure would be nice to avoid the topicals. I read the reviews on petmeds and they are all over the place. Many mention their dogs getting sick from Nexgard, have you guys experienced it?

I've had no issues with its use at all.  Just like people who can all react differently to the same medication, I'm sure dogs do as well. So there is no guarentee.

My dogs have taken it for 3 months now and they are fine. They recommend to give it on a full stomach. 

My only issue is that it seems to make their skin a little drier. Izzy seems to be scratching more and she ended up with a raw spot in her armpit. That's never happened before.

My vet said to definitely give it on an empty stomach. She said it has upset some dogs bellies.  We've had absolutely no issues, too. Sue is absolutely correct though. I myself can't tolerate certain meds because they make me sick to my stomach. We're all different.

Charlie has been taking Nexgard for about 4 months now and has done very well with it. He would get very sleepy and sometimes has loose stools from the Vectra 3D that he was on before.  I have not noticed these or any other side effects for him with the Nexgard.  I like it much more than the topicals.  You could ask your vet for a sample (mine did this for me) and see how it goes for your doodle.

We have been using the chewable version of Nexguard and Heartgard without any issues or reactions. Our pup is 7 months. We live in an area where there are a lot of ticks and this medication has been great in its effectiveness.
