Sophie ate Levi's sock....

Sophie took my one year old grandsons sock off his foot and before I could grab her she swallowed it. I called my Vet and he happened to answer Thank God. He asked if she was on can food which she isn't so he told me to give her greasy food. The only thing I had was Heinz gravy. He told me she could throw it up or pass it through. I was so upset that I forgot to ask him how long it would take to pass and what to watch for as far as her being ok. I have heard of dogs eating things but this is a first for me. Has anyone experienced this that can tell me what to look for..:'( thanks, Denise

Update... This morning Sophie threw up Levi's sock and 5 minutes later threw up one of mine....!!!!!

I never saw her with my sock.  Yesterday my granddaughter dropped a plastic gift card and of course Sophie grabbed it and ran to her toy box.  We did find it at the bottom of her toy box.  I want to thank all of you for your advice and stories. I am afraid this is just the beginning of her eating frenzy!  Denise

Our dalmatian used to eat my daughter's scrunchies all the time....rip them right out of her hair - we would find tons of them in the Spring in the grass!

Geez...I wish I had read all these responses about a few months ago.  My Bexter has an obsession with socks.  He has pooped them out and barfed them out.  The one he puked up came completely intact (covered in bile of course).  No holes whatsoever.  He evidently swallowed that one whole (belonging to my 6 year old thankfully).  The ones that he chewed into bits, you will see wrapped up in his poop.  The first time he ate a sock, I took him to the vet because I was scared to death he would die.  That is the time he ended up puking it up.  However, the vet told me it is a GOOD THING I have pet insurance because she told me that some dogs that do this (eat clothing) will continue to like it even as they age (which I was very upset about...I was hoping it was a puppy thing).  She said that she knows some dogs who have shown signs of lethargy, not eating or pooping, and the sock or whatever it was had to be surgically removed (and sometimes along with some intestines).  Not trying to scare you, but if you don't have pet insurance, I would certainly get some just in case.

From the time our lab was a puppy until he was about 3 years old, he used to eat everything.  He once ate a pair (yes both of them) of my husbands leather dress shoes.  All we found were the soles.  The dang dog was pooping leather, laces and grommets for weeks.

Cooper swallowed a 6 in. by 2 in. ear off his stuffed bunny when he was about 8 mo. old.  Being the bad mom I am, I didn't even notice it was missing until he threw it up a week later.  Not to be gross but I knew it was the bunny ear because he had swallowed it whole and it came back up the same way.  He never acted like he didn't feel good or was in pain so I guess it didn't bother him.

Dogs can eat some really weird stuff and it doesn't seem to phase them.

I don't know what he ate today, but the possibilities are endless. Zach woke up before me and emptied the hamper. Shredded napkins that were in a basket on kitchen table while I was taking out the garbage and now he is doing his best to get things out of the garbage. Fortunately he is not usually this nuts.

My doodles have eaten just about everything imaginable, whole leather shoes, the covers of hard back books, socks, underwear, it has all come back one way or another, but my daughters doodle takes the cake.  I bought my husband a 6 pack of athletic socks, he opened it and took out one pair and left the rest of the pack on the nightstand.  We went out of town and our son watched our doodle and our daughters doodle Murphy while we were gone.  But Murphy lost his appetite, wouldn't eat anything, drank as much as he could.  Our son called and told us he found Murphy in the backyard vomiting a whole sock, we thought that was it.  But he still wouldn't eat so we called the vet and made an appointment to take him in.  Before he got to the vet the dog had vomited two more socks up.  Vet checked him out and he was fine, he still steals socks once in awhile but doesn't swallow them anymore.  Murphy was only about 6 months old at the time, I think it took a day or two for him to vomit all of the socks up.  Hopefully a one year olds sock won't cause Sophie too much trouble.

Thanks for sharing your stories. I feel better knowing she Isn't the only dog that likes clothing. We had a lab that shredded a nerf football. But never ate anything to my knowledge.

I tend to take sock eating pretty lightly as my Bella eats them by the pair and poops them out in matching sets as well. She has never vomited them back up though.

 Granted they are usually my little grandsons socks, but its a non food item non the less. We have insurance and I feel it's probably a matter of when, not if, she will get something stuck as she eats some crazy stuff still and I don't see it changing. It's gotten better, but she still surprises me everyday.

Oh, it usually takes about 24 -36 hours before we see the socks reappear, if we notice they are gone in the first place.

I watched a sock come out of my nieghbour's lab's butt a few weeks ago. That was something.

 

Apparantly my Sophie likes to eat Winston's fur, in clump fulls. She passed an enormous hairball today which contained tid bits of little treasures from toys gone by. It was really gross, but fascinating at the same time.

Jellybean ate one of those yellow rubber gloves that you wear to do dishes. It took 4 days before we saw any of it come out in the poop. Oh these doodles; never a dull moment. This is why we have pet insurance for her....

Camus ate a baby sock that was on his paw to protect an injured pad.  If I remember correctly it took  2-3 days for him to throw it up.  I was so relieved.
