This happens in the morning sometimes when he first wakes up.  WTD has he been dreaming!!??  Being alarmingly ignorant about dog problems of any kind, it took a while to realize that this is what's happening.  He stands immobile with his back hunched up, tail tucked, obviously in pain, and his undercarriage is hard as a rock, with two bumps back of the red rocket.  Yes, I actually looked and felt this time!  The rocket returns to the launch pad after about 15 minutes or so.  This was happening in January, and I took him to the vet, thinking he had a UTI.  But his urine was clean and he wasn't...uh..manifesting when the vet saw him.  We got antibiotics, and since there weren't any appearances for a while, I just assumed he'd had some infection that got cured by the medication.

But its happened two mornings in a row now!  I got busy online, trying to find out if anybody else's dog has had this problem, and whether I should rush him to the vet again.  It doesn't seem to be a major problem, unless the rocket stays on the launching pad for too long.  And there are treatments.  Yes, there are.  KY jelly.  Sugar water.  Trim hair.  For serious or prolonged manifestations:  emergency--surgery.

He's 17 mo. old now, and was neutered when he was eight weeks.

Has anybody else's dog had this problem??

Just like a guy!!!  sorry can't help ya....
Sure doesn't look like he was having any fun....:)
I never had this problem with Luca. In fact, I've never really seen his penis exposed at all. But you're right , you have to make sure the erection doesn't last too long or there could be a compromise of the blood supply.
Aw, poor guy.  My friend's dog humps his special pillow every night...maybe Trav needs a special pillow?
He loves his blanket--like REALLY loves his blanket...:)
The look of obvious pain???? I've heard some males look like their about to die while experiencing orgasm? Could that be it. I bet he was happy you felt it though. :)
Actually, he didn't seem to mind my feeling around...:)

Yikes--are you sure there isn't a stash of Viagra he is getting into?? Lots of human males wake up in this conditon--which I know from personal experience, but we won't go there---that could be his problem. I wouldn't worry about it since it seems to resolve itself.

Ginny--LOL--no, I don't think he's gotten into any Viagra!  Somehow I hadn't thought of dogs waking up in this condition.  Humans, yes--and I won't go there either...

I think this is so funny...probably because I have a similar problem with Guinness.  Whenever he and Murph start "messing around", it ends up like this.  Guinness is a mini Dood, but you'd never guess it when he gets "excited".  It's actually pretty gross, and it takes him a while to go back to normal.  I have to put him in another room for about 15 minutes to give the "rocket" time to go back to normal.  Guinness was also neutered at about 8 weeks.  I wonder if it has anything to do with that.
Hi, Jane!  I'm glad to hear that Trav isn't alone with this problem, and that it doesn't seem to be serious, at least if it doesn't last too long.  Trav sends a high-five paw to Guinness!

I'm sorry Trav, but this is funny....too funny!  This reminds me of commercials that I've heard & seen  "....if you've experienced......lasting more than 3 hours, consult your physician...."

I just want to make sure my kids aren't looking over my shoulder for this one.
