Margaret, it is nice to hear you are making some progress!  Giardia seems to be difficult to get rid of.  Beau is doing well now, but my vet told me he needs to be positive three times before they consider him cured.  We will be taking our next fecal in next week and I am so keeping my fingers crossed!

How much Nutiva are you using?

I have heard that it is a relatively common problem with puppies from up here in the 'wet' NW. She has tested sub-clinical now. I am treating with coconut oil, and will run panacure in cycles until we are clear. She is growing like a weed now, and is not the skinny weak pup she was when I got her. So thankful.

I just bought a huge container at Costco. Nutiva. Great brand. Great price.

Hi, we are are eagerly awaiting our first puppy who will be from ML. We are so excited! Any tips that you can share with us is greatly appreciated. ML seems like a top notch place with beautiful puppies. Our puppy will travel on an airplane to get to us in Illinois -- hope its not too traumatic.

Cynthia, Thank you...good information to know about Panacur.  A Vet did tell me that Metrondazole could cause birth defects in unborn puppies.

@Carolyn - Panacur is supposed to be an effective treatment of giardia and fewer  side effects.

@Anthony - In order validate the health guarantee for your puppy you'll need to take him/her in for a check-up within a few days of picking her/him up.  Normally, the vet will ask you to bring a stool sample in to check for parasites

Anthony, When you pick up your puppy ask Kim what she does for Giardia and Coccidia (the two most common problems with all dogs) If your puppy has diarrhea more then a day take a fresh stool sample to be checked to your Vet. BTW when I saw your photo of Souper I thought you bought 'him', not a puppy sired from him.

@Anthony My new puppy packet from ML contained info about giardia. However, I'm not sure about the timing of the test, it's probably best to ask your vet about it on your first visit. My vet gave me a little kit. Honestly though, I probably waited longer than what was recommended to return it because getting a new puppy--at least for me--was a whole lot of cute chaos! LOL

@Oliver & Liz - Thanks for the info!!  When I get my puppy in mid January from Manor Lake, should I get my puppy tested for Giardia right away?

Comment by Oliver & Elizabeth on November 21, 2012 at 9:04pm
@Anthony Giardia is really common in the Seattle area, in fact, my vet said that 1/5 dogs that he does fecal tests on come back positive for giardia. I picked Oliver up at Kim's house, she lives on a lake, and I can only imagine how hard it must be to keep all of her water loving dogs giardia free in the middle of the summer. While Oliver has always tested negative--being the water loving dog he is--I think it's very likely that one day he will test positive. So while it may be more common with dogs from ML, it's likely more of an issue with dogs who live on a lake in a climate like the pacific northwest (my opinion, of course).
