How does Panacur-c help with Giardia? No where on the box does it say for Giardia, it only lists 6 different kinds of worms.
She's been on a regimen of panicure - 5 days on and 2 weeks off for the last 2 months. The vet doesn't like Metro. And i've been doing all the other stuff - picking up poo right away, bathing her, probiotics, etc.
Is this an on going problem with puppies coming from Manor Lake?
4 months!! What have you used to kill it off??
I have heard adding a little pineapple to their diet makes the poo unpalatable to most dogs...
And 4 months later, we are still fighting giardia - hoping for a clean test in 2 weeks.
Thanks so much Linda! I have employed the spinach and pumpkin and coconut oil to her food and she didn't eat her last bowel movement! I am so thrilled beyond reason.... I don't buy bleach at all, and I try not to be around it as it gives me migraines, anything else I could use that would kill it?? I will research that myself as well and post anything I come up with. She is eating her food and is happy, although the Metro makes her moan. :(
I have some probiotic chews that I got from the vet also, and am giving her those in between the metro to help her poor little gut.
I'm glad to hear that Beau is on the mend. Thank you again for all the advice and info!! Keeping Calm & Carrying On in the Great NW!
Margaret, I am sorry you are experiencing this. Since she is a pooh eater, my thought it would be imperative to be out there with her, so you can keep it cleaned up and not get into a vicious circle with this parasite.
Beau also came with Giardia and was on one round of Panacure, tested positive still and then was on Metronidazole for one week. He is now negative. However, everything I read says this parasite says it can get into their intestines and lay dormant and come back later; or lay dormant outside if it is moist and then find a host and become active - so I am staying on alert just in case.
I can only imagine it is a nightmare for ML as it is continually moist in that area. Hopefully, snow will come soon and kill it. I initially emailed Kim (but I am sure she knows there is a problem with Giardia in the Kennel) at this time as there are too many of these puppies coming out with it, so I would say almost all of them have it that have been born this last summer, etc.
I have always went outside with Charlie when he goes potty, so was able to pick up pooh immediately. Now with Beau, I still go out with both, and get it cleaned up immediately, so they are not stepping in anything accidentally. I also use a solution of 1 pt clorox to 40 pts water (which I keep in a gallon jug), and pour some over every place I pick up pooh. I do not want Charlie to get it and so far he hasn't. Yeah!
I hope Stellaluna keeps on feeling better and better.
Good luck.
Yep, it's Giardia. UGH. She's had a run of Metro, and Panacure. Still testing positive.... herein lies the issue... she's a poo eater!! Oh Poor Stella..... we are trying the spinach in her food to deter the eating of her ick, and she is on another round of the Metro. I am religiously doing the coconut oil now. Our lives are less busy at this point and I'm going to stay on it! The good news is that she has gained weight and seems happier. So maybe we are winning small battles, if not the war.....
Okay, I had to take Stellaluna in after a bout of bloody diarrhea this morning. They did a rapid Giardia test, which came back neg and are sending it out for more study. They went ahead and used the Metro, but cut the dose into a quarter of what I was given. She hasn't had any loose stools since the visit, and is eating well. She lost some weight since we were in two weeks ago, which I don't like. She has been very thin since we brought her home. I will update the vet with her progress tomorrow. Hoping this will be the end of whatever this is.
To help understand Giardia, I have found the following site helpful. http://www.beaglesunlimited.com/health/giardiasis-diagnosis-treatme...
