Training - Experiences, Challenges, and Mindsets

This group provides a "safe place" for members to share their experiences with training, celebrate "big and little successes" and gain insights as we encounter challenges, to support one another, and to explore how our mindset affects our training.

QUESTIONS REGARDING PUPPY BEHAVIORAL CONCERNS (less than 4 mos of age) are better placed in the Main Forum or the Puppy Madness Groups.  Once our Doodles reach the age of four to five months, they are ready to begin their obedience training, and this is the place to share experiences.

I STARTED A NEW CGC COLLAGE, BECAUSE WHEN I ADDED JACK DOODLE AND JAKE THE PICTURES BECAME TOO SMALL TO REALLY SEE....SO NOW WE HAVE PLENTY OF ROOM FOR MORE CGC GRADS!!!!!

Congratulations HATTIE!!!!!

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THESE TRAINING GROUP CGC WINNERS!  Please remember to post a picture of your Doodle whenever they complete any training designation so that we can continue to add to our collage.  If I missed anyone here, also please let me know.

So, the Rally people suggested to me that I should enter Maggie in the show that's coming up at the end of August. They have Rally on Friday, so we could actually do that one day. But I'm looking at…Continue

This week Willow has decided that sitting for exam is terrifying. We've practiced. She will sit and let me go over her like a champ. Feet, ears, tail, teeth. No problem. But when the instructor bent…Continue

Well I haven't been good with training due to the holidays. We are back on it - just finished up a round-the-house 30 minute session. Sit-stay, down-stay, recall, etc...all with distractions. TV, me dancing, Taquito begging. No major successes to note EXCEPT in the end, I taught her a new trick.  Show me your belly!

This is a true testament of how smart these doodles can be. She picked up up after 5 minutes.  What a great girl.  I know this group is about more serious training but I wanted to share that!

We need our "group picture"...currently it's Murph's XMAS picture and a "success story" photo.

Good girl, Lucy!
Comment by Becca & Lucy on January 1, 2011 at 1:59pm

Lucy has been doing much better. I just took her on a walk bc I KNEW she was tired. We have been outside ALL day with the kids. This means NONSTOP running and playing all day for her. She was doing great until she saw my neighbor and almost took me out bc she was so excited to see a person! She LOVES people! ALL people! She is getting more confident when we walked by the neighbors who have 3 dogs that go NUTS when anyone walks by. Yeah Lucy! No tail tucking, just sped up the pace a bit but not too bad! (Our trainer could not believe these dogs go this crazy all day long! They are right by the mailboxes too! Thankfully far from my house!)

Oh, Karen, in some perverted way this makes me feel a little better.  The funny thing is that Murph totally "faked me out".  He was sitting nicely while these ladies approached, and I was so proud of him....telling him "good boy" and even reaching in my pocket for a treat.  At the last minute he decided to go postal, so I really wasn't even prepared.  I wish you could have seen the look on their faces...boy did they move fast.  As they were "fast walking" away, I was yelling an apology and saying...."he's just a puppy, and he's in training".  They never looked back!

Possible JD and Murphy had a phone conversation this a.m. before either of us was awake and decided that their New Year's Resolution would be to protest the new regimes; I had 83 lbs of airborne doodle at the end of the leash this a.m., for the first time in months. We passed a fenced area where four loudly barking, jumping dogs were having a free-for-all, and my busybody went berserk.

I'm really frustrated.  I did heel and sit/stay training today and put the Flip Camera on a tripod on the trunk of my car to video it.  Unfortunately, when I just played it back, there's nothing but legs...and more than half of the time we were out of camera range.  I'll try again tomorrow (and I'll check several times throughout to make sure I'm actually getting usable video).  It would have been pretty interesting, because we had an unexpected interruption.  I was in the vacant golf course parking lot, and not expecting to see anyone.  Two ladies were out walking and wanted to meet Murph.  I put him in a sit/stay and he was doing fine....until they got to about four feet from him.  That's when he broke his stay and jumped.  He scared the pants off these poor ladies.  I thought we were farther along than that.
