Training - Experiences, Challenges, and Mindsets

This group provides a "safe place" for members to share their experiences with training, celebrate "big and little successes" and gain insights as we encounter challenges, to support one another, and to explore how our mindset affects our training.

QUESTIONS REGARDING PUPPY BEHAVIORAL CONCERNS (less than 4 mos of age) are better placed in the Main Forum or the Puppy Madness Groups.  Once our Doodles reach the age of four to five months, they are ready to begin their obedience training, and this is the place to share experiences.

I STARTED A NEW CGC COLLAGE, BECAUSE WHEN I ADDED JACK DOODLE AND JAKE THE PICTURES BECAME TOO SMALL TO REALLY SEE....SO NOW WE HAVE PLENTY OF ROOM FOR MORE CGC GRADS!!!!!

Congratulations HATTIE!!!!!

So, the Rally people suggested to me that I should enter Maggie in the show that's coming up at the end of August. They have Rally on Friday, so we could actually do that one day. But I'm looking at…Continue

This weeks training challenge (Willow)

This week Willow has decided that sitting for exam is terrifying. We've practiced. She will sit and let me go over her like a champ. Feet, ears, tail, teeth. No problem. But when the instructor bent…Continue

So we have a couple of "success stories" about dogs "earning" the right to be off leash in some situations. I think that's great. Maybe this deserves it's own post. How do you know when your dog is ready to be safely off leash, and what did you do to get him ready to be reliable? Allyson, do you want to post something on this?

That is great about Peri! We have started doing that a little bit with Buddy. We live on a relatively quiet street. We have played for a bit in the front yard and he has done a great job. Almost seems more attentive to us outside than he does inside. The couple of times we called "come" to him outside he came...insude he gives us that wonderful blank stare when we call come. Oh well...baby steps! :)

I know Gavin is the big success story this week (sounds like he is doing SO WELL), but I wanted to mention one of ours.
I posted this as a blog, but skimmed over the part about how proud I was of Peri this Sunday. DH and I continue to give her bouts of off-leash freedom. We cannot do this everywhere, because our condo is near a busy road and I am not ready to risk her safety to that point. However, my parents live on about 4 acres (hill in front, hill in back, but neighbors are probably 20 yards away on each side, so dogs and distractions abound). DH and I let her off leash in the front yard (no fence) on Sunday and threw the ball for an hour. Had lots of treats and she had a blast. Never ran from us, went straight to the ball, came when called, etc....I realize most of the time the ball was going on (and she does like her retrieving time!), but still! I was proud. A dog was going crazy in the yard next door - even T. ran over to check it out (and take a poo!!), but Peri stayed by us.
THis may not seem like a big deal to some of you, but she didn't even react to cars driving by, really anything. One of our reasons for having these sessions is to give her some freedom so if God forbid something happens and the collar slips off or something, she won't feel the need to DART.
Sorry for the loooong post.

Last evening while at our dog park, Rooney and his friend Freddie ran way to the far side of the park, where they got very interested in sniffing something that I could not see. I called him to me using his touch it command even though I thought he would be too far away and too distracted. He came flying to me like a real champ! I was so proud and the other owners were amazed. Rooney turned 12 weeks yesterday.

Things became much clearer to me at my intermediate training class with Riley when the instructor informed me (in front of the class) that my dog did not have ADD - I did!!! Everyone got a hoot out of that!!!

You are a hoot Jane!! Thanks for the adorable acknowledgment.

Well, okay, I am feeling pretty successful this week. I believe that I have done a very good job managing two doodles. I happily realized that Gavin is a fair bit stronger obedience-wise than I initially thought. Mylie has not had the training that Gavin has, but is very smart and older at 3 years. So, between Gavin and I, in just five days, we have trained Mylie to “go to your bed,” sit at intersections during walks, stay off the furniture and lie down. He has been an excellent role model during walks and is giving me more eye contact. Mylie in turn has helped me improve Gavin’s recall. She has also given me a golden opportunity to train Gavin with distractions in an otherwise solid environment for him (the house). On the first day he pretty much ignored me and looked to Mylie for direction. However as the days move along, he is separating more from her and her cues and looking to me for what he should do. He is back to following me around the house. I am realizing more and more what a wonderful dog I have.
