Training - Experiences, Challenges, and Mindsets

This group provides a "safe place" for members to share their experiences with training, celebrate "big and little successes" and gain insights as we encounter challenges, to support one another, and to explore how our mindset affects our training.

QUESTIONS REGARDING PUPPY BEHAVIORAL CONCERNS (less than 4 mos of age) are better placed in the Main Forum or the Puppy Madness Groups.  Once our Doodles reach the age of four to five months, they are ready to begin their obedience training, and this is the place to share experiences.

I STARTED A NEW CGC COLLAGE, BECAUSE WHEN I ADDED JACK DOODLE AND JAKE THE PICTURES BECAME TOO SMALL TO REALLY SEE....SO NOW WE HAVE PLENTY OF ROOM FOR MORE CGC GRADS!!!!!

Congratulations HATTIE!!!!!

So, the Rally people suggested to me that I should enter Maggie in the show that's coming up at the end of August. They have Rally on Friday, so we could actually do that one day. But I'm looking at…Continue

This week Willow has decided that sitting for exam is terrifying. We've practiced. She will sit and let me go over her like a champ. Feet, ears, tail, teeth. No problem. But when the instructor bent…Continue

Yea for Stay, Boca!

Boca and I have been working hard 5-6 days per week. We have a rough heel and commanded sit when we stop walking. Sometime next week...Boca will begin learning automatic sits for when we stop during heeling, sit stay, and stand stay! I'm excited to get to stay training!

Webber and I had to do an exercise in Rally obedience that might be fun to practice. Start with heel/sit. Take one step and do heel/sit. Take two more steps and do heel/sit and then three steps and heel/sit. You treat (or praise) as soon as the dog is in the sit position each time. After doing this a bunch of times on a walk, heel sit gets more automatic. Eventually you phase out the treats if you are using them.

I had the same problem with my two; they were tethered together and pulled each other, and my arm. After resisting it, I purchased two pinch collars. The problem disappeared. They pulled and corrected one another and I think they got one correction from me. It has saved my rotator cuff and I can take them more places because they are under better control.

Charlie, I think there will be lots of ideas for this. Can you please start a discussion? It's much easier to get the feedback that way. Thanks.

I have 2 doodles. When we walk them on a leash they want to pull my arms out of the scoket. they do listen when i tell them to heal and they will sit next to me but as soon as they start walking again they start pulling any ideas?

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, STARLIT! I'm so proud of how far you've come this year. Do you think you can teach Murphy? I hope you have a fun day today!

Holy Doodles, there's LOTS of training "stuff" going on and some really good "successes". DeeDee, I love your question. I'm going to start a discussion so you can get some feedback. Karen, I think it's a "big deal" that Jack is backing away from the door and "sitting" on command when there's someone there. Donna, you're definitely making progress on your "auto sit"....YAY! Zack and Gavin....NICE! I think it would be really awesome if we could start uploading little videos of our training. That would be a great way to help one another. I'm planning one for next week....if Murph will only cooperate.

Sheila has a bad habit that has gradually developed over summer. When she wants to come in, she sits by door. But when I open the door, she backs up and won't come in. Like she wants to entice me to chase her or play with her. Tonight we had a battle of wills that lasted 3 hrs. She FINALLY came in when I called her and she had a treat inside the door. But then she went in laundry room by herself to sleep. I didn't berate her for NOT coming in. I just called her and we made eye contact and she would just stand there looking at me. If I make a move toward her she runs off. This will be really annoying once weather gets cold. Any suggestions?
