Training - Experiences, Challenges, and Mindsets

This group provides a "safe place" for members to share their experiences with training, celebrate "big and little successes" and gain insights as we encounter challenges, to support one another, and to explore how our mindset affects our training.

QUESTIONS REGARDING PUPPY BEHAVIORAL CONCERNS (less than 4 mos of age) are better placed in the Main Forum or the Puppy Madness Groups.  Once our Doodles reach the age of four to five months, they are ready to begin their obedience training, and this is the place to share experiences.

I STARTED A NEW CGC COLLAGE, BECAUSE WHEN I ADDED JACK DOODLE AND JAKE THE PICTURES BECAME TOO SMALL TO REALLY SEE....SO NOW WE HAVE PLENTY OF ROOM FOR MORE CGC GRADS!!!!!

Congratulations HATTIE!!!!!

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THESE TRAINING GROUP CGC WINNERS!  Please remember to post a picture of your Doodle whenever they complete any training designation so that we can continue to add to our collage.  If I missed anyone here, also please let me know.

So, the Rally people suggested to me that I should enter Maggie in the show that's coming up at the end of August. They have Rally on Friday, so we could actually do that one day. But I'm looking at…Continue

This week Willow has decided that sitting for exam is terrifying. We've practiced. She will sit and let me go over her like a champ. Feet, ears, tail, teeth. No problem. But when the instructor bent…Continue

Hurley watches Blue Bloods with us.  I saw that part where Selleck handles the dog.  It was interesting to watch to see if what Selleck did with the dog was correct.  I guess that depends on the trainer you talk to but it seemed to follow along with what Hurley was taught by his trainer.

Used to love Tom Selleck, and I love GSDs, so that would be worth watching.

Anyone here watch Blue Bloods?  I'd never heard of it but the topic came up on a training group I read and they were all excited to see Tom Selleck handle a GSD properly...so I had to check it out. You can watch it on Hulu for free...whatever the last episode was.  Between minute around 11 minutes in.  He goes to the dog's cage (who is suspected of biting people or something) calls it to COME, heels around with it, has it do a down stay and recall and then heels it again.  Not a terribly exciting section of footage unless you love dog training and GSDs and possibly Tom (not me, but just in case there's a Selleck fan here).

Sorry Karen, I have been away longer than I thought.

Sue, you might want to post this question as a training group discussion instead of here in the "Comments" section. It will be easier for people to respond and give you suggestions.

I have been MIA for many months but I knew I could get some help here. Lily Grace is a sweet smart medium Labradoodle that just turned 15 months old She is testing again for her CGC in two weeks. A seven months she did not pass and running her through intermediate and then CGC class again, we are going to try again.

Lily Grace has just developed a bad behavior. When she is with a dog that she knows (neighbors and I have stopped to talk) and another dog walks by, she has started barking and lunging at that passer-by. It is a bark saying stay away, this dog is mine. I am at a loss on how to stop it. I have put her in a sit and tried to turn her away but so far this has not helped calm her down. It is random so I have not been good at anticipating when she will react this way. She meets other dogs well, one on one or even two or three on one. It is her reaction to a outsider when she finds herself with a "pack". Any suggestions will be appreciated. This is bad timing as her test is coming soon.

Donna, first of all I agree with Karen....educating your whole family is the first step.  Secondly, I agree with BG about starting a discussion about training advice to address this.

Hi Donna - maybe you can start a discussion with your question just because it better lends itself to comments and discussion than this comment section.  Please make sure you put your pups age and any other important details and I will respond to you there.  I certainly understand your worry.

Donna, how old is your daughter? If she is old enough to undress herself, she needs to understand that her socks, underwear, etc. all must to be put away, to prevent a tragedy from happening to a dog i am sure she loves as much as you do. Dirty clothes must go into a hamper with a lid, preferably in a closet, and clean clothes in closed drawers or closets. Nothing should be left in a laundry basket. That would be the easiest way to prevent your dog from stealing articles of clothing.
