Training - Experiences, Challenges, and Mindsets

This group provides a "safe place" for members to share their experiences with training, celebrate "big and little successes" and gain insights as we encounter challenges, to support one another, and to explore how our mindset affects our training.

QUESTIONS REGARDING PUPPY BEHAVIORAL CONCERNS (less than 4 mos of age) are better placed in the Main Forum or the Puppy Madness Groups.  Once our Doodles reach the age of four to five months, they are ready to begin their obedience training, and this is the place to share experiences.

I STARTED A NEW CGC COLLAGE, BECAUSE WHEN I ADDED JACK DOODLE AND JAKE THE PICTURES BECAME TOO SMALL TO REALLY SEE....SO NOW WE HAVE PLENTY OF ROOM FOR MORE CGC GRADS!!!!!

Congratulations HATTIE!!!!!

Stephanie, it would be better to post this as a new discussion here in the Training Group rather than as a "comment". The Comments section doesn;t allow people to respond directly to your questions, and you won't be able to find the comment in the future. All you have to do to start a new discussion is to click "+ Add a Discussion" immediately above this comment wall. :)

We've earned our CGC the day he turned 6 months old.  He just got his second title and he is still 7 months old! We are entering in versatility class next!

More proof of the importance of training: In a recent year-long study conducted by the National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy (NCPPSP) to look at the reasons pets are relinquished to animal shelters revealed some facts that will not be surprising to members of this group.

According to the study:

  • The majority of the surrendered dogs (47.7%) and cats (40.3%) were between 5 months and 3 years of age.
  • The majority of dogs (37.1%) and cats (30.2) had been owned from 7 months to 1 year.
  • Approximately half of the pets (42.8% of dogs; 50.8% of cats) surrendered were not neutered. Many of the pets relinquished (33% of dogs; 46.9% of cats) had not been to a veterinarian.
  • Animals acquired from friends were relinquished in higher numbers (31.4% of dogs; 33.2% of cats) than from any other source.
  • Close to equal numbers of male and female dogs and cats were surrendered.
  • Most dogs (96%) had not received any obedience training.

I agree with Diane....there is no tool that is as good as actual training.  Dogs want to pull...they want to decide where they're going to walk.  Training them that you are the one making those decisions and that it's in their best interest to walk by your side makes a huge difference in the quality of your walks.

I totally agree about the retractable leashes not being safe.  I got bit by a dog that was on a retractable leash.  Had the owner been using a regular leash it would not have happened as she would have had much better control over her dog.

We used a regular collar and leash with with Hurley and we did not use treats.  It took a lot of patience and practice starting with short training sessions a couple of times a day and gradually increasing the time of the walks/training.

Hurley was made to sit on my left side.  The leash loop would be around my right wrist and I would hold the rest of the leash in my left hand.  I say 'heel' as I shuffle my feet a little and start to move forward.  If he breaks heel. We stop and start all over.

Once he got that message down, the walks were extended.  Any time he breaks heel or looses concentration I put him back in sit and we start over.   Having said all of that there are walks where I let him have freedom.  I use a longer leash and allow him to explore.  Those walks are closer to hikes.   He gets lots of pats and verbal praise for heeling and listening, etc.

Hope that helps some.
