Hopefully I won't be waiting for a puppy long. Just wondered if anyone has recommendations on what to have at home for the new doodle puppy.

So my family keeps asking me what I want for Christmas...I'm thinking of just sending them all a link to my "wish list" on petsmart.com! You know, like a baby gift registry, except I'm adopting a canine baby instead? Anybody think this will work? haha!

Here is something I found a long time ago and send to my adoptive families awaiting their puppies.

how to prepare for a puppy

pour cold apple juice on the carpet in several places and walk barefoot in the dark

wear a sock to work that has had its toes shredded by a blender

immediately upon waking, stand outside in the rain and dark yelling, be a good puppy, go potty, hurry up, lets go. please?????

play catch with a wet tennis ball

run out in the snow with bare feet and close the gate

tip over the basket of laundry and scatter it all over the floor

leave your dirty underwear on the living room floor. that’s where your puppy will drag it anyways especially when you have company

jump out of your chair shortly before the end of your tv show and run to the door shouting no no do that outside. miss the end of your program

gouge the leg of the dining room table several times with a screw driver

put chocolate pudding on the floor in the morning and don’t clean it up before you get back from work

take a warm cuddly blanket fresh from the dryer and wrap it around yourself. this is what it will feel like when your puppy falls asleep on your lap.

Hi Park Mom, I recognized you right away. I recommend no food or water after 5:30 pm and that usually produces one potty outing a night. Your chocolate girl is a small medium so will have a fair sized bladder and may last the night. My puppies sleep in a wire crate. If you want to use the litter box at night, I suggest you set up a 4'x4' exercise pen and place the wire crate and the litter box inside. If you choose to contain her in the wire cage, you can set up a baby monitor so you can hear her upstairs.

My understanding Park Mom is that a puppy can "hold it" for the number of hours it is in months. ie: 2 months old=2 hours holding it. I'm not sure if that applies during the night hours but if you stop water at say 7:00pm then you should be able to get a, relatively, good night's sleep. It's been a very long time since our dogs have been puppies so I'm really drawing on past experience and hope it applies this time around with Gaston. :)

Patty, I am going to re-read that article on nipping. I'm your customer with the 1 1/2 year old daughter, waiting excitedly for one of Tina's chocolate babies.
I have a question for Patty and the group: what have you heard is the best way to handle the early stage when puppy needs to pee several times per night? I believe our puppy will arrive from the breeder already trained to use a litter box. Can we just leave puppy in a safe room with litter box accessible overnight? Or is it really safer to have puppy go in her cage overnight and then plan to wake up several times to let her out to use her box or to go outside? I'm trying to work this out in my mind in advance especially because our baby puppy will not be sleeping upstairs in our bedroom area as an extra precaution for allergies. So we are not certain we would hear her in the middle of the night. Thank you in advance for all thoughts.

Boy of Boy - I've got a long wait. My puppy won't get here 'til next spring. I really partial to red doodles and want a little red girl so I have to wait 'til next spring. Fortunately I've got my Fergie in the meantime but she' anxious too.
