Thanks for the welcome! Yeah, I was certain they would never take to the water and they still give me baleful looks when I give them a bath. :) They are true water lovers now...when it comes to lakes, oceans, or pools. Sometimes it just takes a little perserverence, but older dogs can learn new tricks.

Welcome Moose&Mica! I am so glad to hear that even older doodles are able to become "water loving doods"! Not everyone is able to expose their puppies to water at an early age, so this is good to know. I love the idea of blowing bubbles over the ocean to entice him into the water! Great idea.

We didn't get our two until they were 7 and 9 months old, so they were past the stage we could teach them to love water as puppies. We took Moose to FL to see the folks and they had a dog beach. He is totally nuts about bubbles, so we blew bubbles on the beach and he chased them into the ocean. Before that he really didn't want to go in, but he would go in with us for short periods. Mica learned at the dog park pond by following Moose into the water. He would go out to the center of the pond to get away from her and it drove her nuts. So she finally followed him in. If you can find something the dog can't resist and use that around the water that will sometimes help them get into the water. Baby pools are good, but Moose just looks at those like they are giant bath tubs. :) I'm going to drag the one I have out again this summer to see if they will play in it now that they both love water.....except it will probably still look like a bath tub to them. They were both fairly bad at swimming at first (they tend to forget they have back ends). All furious paddling up front and the rear would just sink. Now they know to move both ends and they swim very well. :)

My water lover is Lily, Zeke not so much. Lily loves to walk in the rain, play in her water bowl and dunk her head under water in streams when we walk in the woods. She is not as crazy about baths ( no splashing allowed ). We are looking forward to taking her camping this summer where she can get in a lake and really swim.

Perfect timing. Koji wiill be 2 this May - was only 1 year + last summer - he showed no interest in the water last year - this year - he is running into ponds and brooks but not swimming - He is a shy guy with new things So, this summer I am going to teach him how to swim in my friends' pool I'll keep youposted - he'll either love it or hate it, I think

i put kensi into my parents pool at about 12 weeks and she figured out how to paddle pretty well. I think it just makes a difference if they "like" the water much or not. I am hopefully getting a second doodle in late June/early July, I am crossing my fingers that pup will love the water as much as Kensi!!

The kiddie pool is a good idea. Also, a place where she can wade in and out (as far as SHE wants to go), Murphy wasn't into it his first summer (I actually had to hold him up by the tail....he looked like a drowning man...before he could swim into shore otherwise he was vertical in the water, pawing madly a the water) (born in May) but he was swimming like a pro the next spring

Janice have you tried one of those plastic kiddie pools filled with water to start? Ruthie might ease into that, and then you can try the lake once she is comfortable.

Hi- Ruthie isn't much of a water loving doodle as you would think she should be BUT she will NOT turn down a walk in the rain!! She loves the walk but if it is raingin and she has to go in her backyard you literally have to go out with her. Any suggestions on how to get her to like to swim? We took her to a lake once and walked her down to the water's edge and she put her toe in a little and then jumped back when it got wet. She is a prissy doodle!!
