Three years ago, I lost a wonderful friend to Breast Cancer. She was 48 and left behind two teenage boys and her husband. This is going to be a long blog, but how do you sum up someone’s life in only a few short paragraphs?
After graduating from college with a degree in Chemical Engineering, my husband got his first real job in Baltimore, Maryland, at Bethlehem Steel. He met another engineer there named Eric, who also lived in our apartment…

I hate being sick and this week I have been sick as a doodle. I am not blaming it on New Jersey, but I started feeling ill this weekend on the first night in Cape May and it has gone downhill from there. Fudge and Vern are great doodles, but not so great in the Nursing department. Sure, Fudge was worried when I stumbled out to the living room at 4 am and Vern did lift his head from where he was sleeping and gave me a look like, “Hey, what are you doing up?” but I never sensed the… Continue

Years ago, when we bought our current home, we moved from the suburbs into the country. I had spent my whole life living in the city and was unprepared for the darkness that falls at night when you are used to streetlights. The first night I stayed alone at our new house I was on high alert imaging all kinds of thing moving about in the nearby cornfields and it did not help that my husband kept referencing the old movie Children of the Corn. Sure enough, I started…

First, let me start off by saying, I love television. I know some people think it is mindless entertainment and prefer other forms of more intellectual stimulation, but I am not one of those people. Show me the new fall line-up and I experience something akin to pure euphoria. I have lots of members in my family who feel the same, and I guarantee you if they measured IQ with TV trivia questions, we could hold our next family reunion at a Mensa convention. I…

Lots of times here on DoodleKisses, I see members ask if they should stop crating their dogs at night. Many of those times, the dog is happy in the crate and it is the human who misses the doggie snuggling at night. Take my word for it, let sleeping dogs lie IN their crates.
In the summer, Fudge and Vern get too hot on any bed and prefer to sleep on the cold, hard floor. They might start up here on our bed for a little bit, but usually when my husband…

Once upon a time, there lived a beautiful Princess named Fudge in the land of Seven Valleys. She had beautiful, curly brown hair and was called a Doodle.
One day she turned to her stunning, thin, and exceptionally smart mother known as Queen…

Fudge and Vern are my dogs. Most of their care falls to me, because I am home with them the most, and I think that alone should make me their favorite person in the whole world. I just don’t think I should have to tolerate anything less. I gave birth to two lovely daughters that love me, but they think their dad walks on water. I can’t tell you how many times I have picked up the phone and one of them has asked to talk to their dad about a pressing…

Here in Pennsylvania it has been raining non-stop since Friday. I don’t mean look at the lovely sprinkles kind of rain either, but torrential downpours.
Yesterday, I woke up to water in the basement and spent the next couple of hours mopping up the water, moving stuff around, and cleaning downspouts. I might have also called my husband at…

When our oldest daughter started college and moved away from home, it was so hard on my husband and me. This was our first little birdie to leave the nest and we were sad. The first day back to work after we got her situated, I was talking to a much older woman who told me that as much as I missed her now, it was going to be even harder to get used to having her back for the summers when she had been away so long. I wasn’t sure I believed her, but she…

Our first dog, Hershey, loved people food. Our youngest daughter was eight when we got Hershey and they soon became best friends. A couple of times when she was in the bathtub, I would hear her talking to someone and open the door only to find that Hershey was in the tub with her. We explained to her repeatedly that the point of a bath was to get clean and we preferred her bath to be dog free, but every now and then Hershey would still get in that tub. Looking…

I hate to start talking about the old days, but years ago when I gave birth things were much different. When I gave birth to my oldest daughter back in 1984, there was a big push for natural childbirth. I gave birth in a hospital, but was attended by two midwives, and I had a very long labor. I had no IV’s and no drugs to help. The midwife in charge encouraged me to walk all during my labor to speed things up, but on or about the fourteenth hour, I…
