If Time Equals Money, What Does Doodle-Time Equal?

I was thinking this morning about the value of time.  Specifically, the 10-15 minutes Halas and I spend on our morning walks.

For the last couple of months, if I leave the house for my morning workout, I take Halas for a walk when I get home.  After that, I get ready and head off to work.  So these walks mean that I get to work about 10-15 minutes later than I would otherwise.  I got to thinking this morning about that 10-15 minutes, and what it's worth.

Getting to work 10-15…

How to Host a Doodle Birthday Dinner

Halas turned 5 yesterday (9/1).  We were going to have his birthday dinner last night, but we were without power for 6 hours, so ordering pizza seemed like a better idea.  His birthday dinner was rescheduled for tonight.  We are dog-sitting my friends' cockapoo, Bubbles, and my mom's maltipoo, Barley, came over, too.  It was a three-doodle party!  The following is my advice on how to have a successful Birthday Dinner / Dinner Party.

Step 1:  Buy some yummy stuff at the store.  I…

A Walk in The Park

Halas here.  The weather has been great here this weekend, and I got to spend a lot of time outside.  Yesterday afternoon, my mommy took me on part of her run.  It was really fun, but it made me tired, and it made my hair look like this:

OK, fine. My hair looks like this a lot.  But I'm blaming the jogging this time.

Today, we went for a nice,…

Update on Barley Bear

My mom has had Barley for almost 3 weeks now.  He's had all of his shots, been groomed, and been neutered.  He's spent a lot of time with Halas, and they are getting along great.  Halas loves getting Barley to chase him around, and they take turns stealing toys from each other.  I figured Halas would have an influence on Barley, but I think Barley is having an influence on Halas, too.  Barley is either making Halas more brave, or Halas just doesn't want anyone to think that Barley can do…

What a Difference a Month Makes!

In October, Halas and I went to a huge flyball tournament in Indianapolis.  Besides ducking out because he's afraid of another collision, he also ran very slowly.  He was really apprehensive, but also tired.  So we got as many positive things out of the weekend as we could, and we worked on a plan going forward.

For the next few weeks, we worked a lot on his drive.  He was apprehensive to leave me to run to the box, so he was running really slowly towards the box.  His speed coming…

Thanks for the Birthday Wishes!

Halas and I are at the tail end of our birthday weekend. His 4th birthday was Thursday, and my 42nd is today.  We played, shopped, and visited with friends a lot this weekend.  Halas and I haven't been playing much lately because of my wrist, so I was especially happy to get him out a lot this weekend.  Saturday afternoon, Halas got to pick out a new Nylabone at the doggy store.  Saturday night, he got to play with our friends' 2 year old daughter, and that really wore him out.  We filled in… Continue

They Tried to Make Me Go to Rehab, I Said.....OK

This is only partly doodle related, and, no, it doesn't mean I can't participate in yappy hour any more.

Three weeks ago, I went in for minor, outpatient surgery on my wrist. My ECU tendon in my right hand/wrist had been hurting for almost 2 years. As a matter of fact, it was exactly 2 years ago today that I hurt it.  An MRI didn't show any problems, but with the pain still lingering, the surgeon was just going to do a quick, simple tenosynovectomy. The surgery takes less…

Vacations in Maine

Laurie's blog about her beach trip reminded me of the trip we take to Maine each year.  My friends (well, their parents) own a place in the middle of nowhere in Maine.  I've known the family since 4th grade, which was 1978, but a few other friends and I finally started going with them to Maine in 1996.  Counting this year, which we're missing, we've only missed 4 years since then.  I'm really missing it this year.  The property is a collection of a few small cabins on a pond.  There's the…

Portrait of Halas

I'm picking up this painting of Halas tomorrow at our doodle romp.  I think it looks great.  I can't wait to see it in person.

Here is the painter's info.  She said she would love to paint more doodles.

Halas Gets a New Ride

I was 2 years into a 3 year lease on a very nice Lexus ES350.  I took it in last Friday for the oil change and tire rotation, and I got the new RX350 as a loaner.  I decided that in a year, when my current lease was up, I was going to buy a used RX.  I was putting too many miles on this car to justify leasing my next one, and the new RXs were too expensive for me, so I'd have to go with a used one.  I mentioned this to my salesperson (I've used the same one every time I've leased something… Continue

The Leave It Command Worked! Whew!

Our team had to cancel our flyball weekend, so I've been trying to do extra things with Halas this weekend to try to make up for it.  We went to the Peoria Doodle Romp yesterday, and I took him hiking/swimming this morning.  We have a nice area of trails that run along a creek, and that's where we went this morning.  Halas had a blast running through the water, but there weren't any spots deep enough to swim.  So he just ran through the water, ran on the banks, ran in the water, ran on the… Continue

Such a Sleepy Dood

I'm a CPA, and we started our long, tax season hours this week.  That means that I worked long days during the week, and I had to go in today.  I come home at lunch to walk Halas during the week, but I still feel bad about the long work days.  So I look forward to spending Saturday afternoon/evening and all day Sunday with my dood.  I worked until about 1:30 today, but then I had to come home, change clothes, and head out to a demo at an ISU basketball game that our flyball team was doing.… Continue

Halas Joins the Rabbit Killer Club

My Mom wanted to keep Halas Friday night when we got back into town, so she took him to her house. At about 11:00, she let him out for his last potty before bedtime. As she opened the door, she saw some rabbits scatter, but Halas was already out the door. Most of them went one direction and escaped under the fence. But one went the opposite direction and wasn't so lucky. We think maybe he tried to get under the fence on the other side of the yard, but it slowed him down too much, and Halas was… Continue

Rough Flyball Weekend for Halas

Our team was really out of sorts early Saturday, but we put it together and ended up having a decent day. At the beginning of the weekend, Halas was 393 points away from 1,000 points and his next title. On Saturday, he got 246 points, so we were looking pretty good. He even ran full-time on Saturday, meaning that he ran every single one of our races. That's the first time he's done that, and he probably won't really do that very often, so it was good experience for him. We also had 2 other dogs… Continue

Great Flyball Weekend for Halas!

This past weekend, we went to the CanAm flyball tournament in Indianapolis. It's the largest tournament in the US each year. They broke the world record for the most participants on Sunday, with 810 dogs! Halas and I were there Friday and Saturday, but we had to miss Sunday. Halas had been doing really well in tournaments lately, but those have all been with only one ring (one race) running. When we went to a tournament with 2 rings earlier in the year, Halas was pretty overwhelmed, and he… Continue

Sunday at Flyball Even Better!!!

We were hoping that Halas would pick up Sunday where he left off Saturday, and he did not disappoint. He ended Saturday on a positive note, and Sunday was a great day. He ran in 5 of our team's 6 races today. Early in the day, we decided that we'd keep him out of the last race, because he would probably be getting pretty tired by then. Our races today were 4 heats, and my little guy ran a total of 17 heats in those 5 races. Most of his runs were clean, and in the couple where he messed up and… Continue

Saturday at Flyball

We're at another flyball tournament this weekend. The last one we were at (3 weeks ago) was pretty large, and Halas was a little overwhelmed. He managed to do his first clean run that weekend, but that was his only clean run the whole weekend. We've been working on distractions, etc. at practice, but it's hard to recreate a tournament atmosphere at practice. So, today, we started out just running him during warm-ups, not running during races. Our team had 6 races today, 5 heats each. On our… Continue

Halas' 2nd Flyball Tournament

Halas and I finished up our 2nd flyball tournament earlier today. The first one was back in May, so it's been over 3 months between tournaments. He's been doing great in practice - not bobbling the ball, not skipping jumps, passing other dogs really well, running with the regular line up of dogs, etc. So we were all expecting big things from him at this tournament. It didn't go exactly as we had hoped. This tournament was much bigger than the first one. It was in the same location, but they had… Continue

Our First Flyball Tournament

Halas and I went to our first flyball tournament this weekend. He isn't ready to race yet, but he's getting close. We went to this tournament with our team just to help Halas get used to the noise and activity at a tournament. It's crazy-loud in there with all of the dogs barking. And there's a lot of activity with dogs racing, getting ready to race, finishing up a race, or just hanging out in their crates waiting for the next race. There are just a ton of distractions to work through, and… Continue

Halas' New 'Do

I decided to get Halas' hair cut short. I like the way it turned out. His legs need to grow out a little bit, but they had to be cut pretty short last time, so that's a work in process. I'm going to miss the long coat a little bit, but I won't miss the brushing time, and I'm sure Halas won't either. I could spend 90 minutes brushing him at night, and a new mat would show up overnight that would take another 20 minutes to get rid of. It just became really difficult to keep up with, and… Continue
