It's official! Penny now has her first nickname....Fuzzlump! Kinda rolls off the tongue doesn't it?..."Come on Fuzzlump!"
We seem to have reached some major milestones this last week....certain things have seemed to 'click' with her. She now goes to the door when she needs to go out, no accidents at all for days, takes the pressure of the constant vigilance looking for those tell-tale signs. She sometimes leaves it almost a bit late, as on occasion she hurls herself at the door, but that's OK, we can cope with that. We've stopped putting those pee pads in her crate at night, she only needed them twice anyway, and she now makes no fuss at all when it's time for bed, not that she did much anyway, maybe for 5 minutes or so, but that seems to be a thing of the past....awesome!
Until this last week she has always barked and leaped about when it's time to feed her, we tried to stop that by insisting that she stop and sit before we set her food bowl down, sometimes having to hide it behind our backs until she'd quiet down. Now she just stands and waits until we fill her bowl, the sits nice and well mannered before we set it down...again, awesome! Talking of her food bowl or dish, whatever you want to call it, Penny does sleep in the weirdest of places and positions, see photo below...
We get lots of laughs at some of the positions she sleeps in, often looking like an old pajama case that some kid has just flung into a corner...hilarious!
She still has a hard time resisting the urge to bark at the cats though, you can see her trying so hard not to, but it gets the better of her, that's one of the biggest problem we're having, as we're worried that as she lunges at them, she's snapping those razor-wire like teeth at them, and we're worried that she might catch one of them, and that's gonna hurt, and the poor indoor cats don't have any front claws to defend themselves. Saying that, there are occasions when we can see signs of definite improvement, If one of the cats, especially our eldest Bunny, is sprawled on the floor (brave I know), Penny will go and lay down just out of reach and shuffles ever closer, but because of the snapping jaws, the cats eventually get rattled and scoot off. They have got used to the fact that Penny does sleep and go outside a lot, so take advantage of the quality floor time by rolling and sprawling around on the carpet like they always used to...which is nice to see them relax more again. See the 3 photos below (they tell their own story) of our middle cat Skippy, who even though seems to hate Penny the most, and I actually found her eating Penny's kibble the other day.
Penny had her first bath since she joined us on Sunday, I don't know how often they're meant to have them, but her soft fluffy fur does seem to attract bits of dried vegetation from the yard, which makes her a bit itchy. I won't lie and say she adored the bath, but she didn't play up either. She stood still in the tub while she was soaked, shampooed, and rinsed off and she looked very forlorn all wet, but she was good. Then we dried her off with a ShamWow, can't recommend those things enough...they're fantastic. Then Penny had a mad 10 minutes dashing around the house before she fell asleep...water does that to her....which is great!
I don't know about the rest of you when your dogs were pups, but until this week, Penny was either highly charged awake or totally zonked out asleep. Awake sometimes to the point of exasperation on our part, and then dead to the world for hours. Now she dozes more often, not completely asleep, but enjoying relaxing which makes the awake time less frantic...much better! That is until about 8.30pm until 10pm when she is just frikkin' impossible, getting into everything, harassing the cats, attempting to chew on stuff she shouldn't be, like our fingers and toes etc, then just when you're pulling your hair out (not easy for me as I don't have much left), she settles down for the rest of the evening....Sheesh!
I think that's it for this week folks, keep the comments coming, makes the blogging all the more worthwhile.
