But this was very different than the usual opossum encounters we have every spring & summer. DD went to the garage to get something out of my car. She came back in the house to tell me there was a baby opossum in the garage. Because we have a cat door installed we always get young opossums this time of year taking advantage of an easy dinner of cat food. But this time it truly was a baby opossum. I could hold it in one gloved hand. It was pretty obvious that the little guy was too young to be away from its mom. The only answer on how it got in the garage was that our 16 year cat, Moonshine, somehow got it away from its mom and brought it home.
The little guy had a scratched tail and shoulder. I knew it was too young to just release and hope it would find its mum. So I wrapped the baby in a warm tea towel, put him in a box and drove to a wonderful park and wildlife sanctuary called Chattahoochee Nature Center. Unfortunately the kind folks there said they were only licensed to rehab raptors and reptiles. They did confirm my little guy was a male and gave me directions to another facility that was licensed to rehab wild mammals.
So I bundled my little boy back into the car and drove to the Cobb Animal Emergency Clinic. Of course I got lost and the little guy and I spent about 30 minutes trying to get "unlost". I kept talking to him as I was driving and after a bit he peeked his head out from the tea towel. It looked like he was listening to me as his ears would move as I modulated my voice. Finally, after a quick call we got our bearing and found the clinic. He is now safe and being cared for by the wonderful folks at the clinic.
