It has been a rough week for our family. Dan's uncle passed away Sunday of a massive heart attack at age 56 leaving behind 3 beautiful children and his wife. This was so hard on our family as everyone was extremely close. Then I also found out this past week that 2 of my close friends who recently got pregnant lost their babies... so it has been very sad and hectic around our home as we have been running around trying to help our family get things in order and be with the children.

Anyways, because of all this we had to leave Remington for 2 days. We got one of Dan's good friends to stay at the house with him while we were gone and of course Mike fell head over heals in love with our big boy! When we finally got back of course Dan and I spoiled him rotten since we had missed him so very much. Well, last night I let Remington sleep in bed with me. This was always suppose to be a BIG no no around our house as I never wanted him to get use to it. Usually Remington will hop in bed with me for about 20 minutes and then he goes and sleeps on the cold bathroom floor... but last night... he slept in bed with me all night LONG! This isn't something that I would ever normally let go on around our house, but I had missed him and it was so nice to snuggle up with him. Now however, I'm wondering... did I create a monster?!?!

I have always heard once you start letting them do this then they'll never stop. But the thing is... it doesn't really bother me.... I kind of liked having him with me last night... so I think that I may have created a monster in myself! HAHA! What is everyone else's thoughts about letting their dog snooze in bed with them at night??? A good or bad thing? Keep in mind he will end up being quite a big boy... :)

Fozzy started sleeping with me in my bed after I had been on vacation for 10 days. But normally he will come up and the bed will be too warm, so he will either move to my feet or the floor. Just teach him to only come when invited and to get off when asked.

I think you needed some consoling and cuddling with Remington and he sensed it. You know, doodles were bred to be therapy dogs and they do a great job. So, if you do not want him in bed, just tell him no and get down and he will do that. If you do want him in bed with you, invite him. Our dogs are huge (95 and 107 pounds) and they never sleep in our bed, but they hop up when invited every morning to get scratches while we drink our coffee in bed. When Hondo was sick early this summer, he needed the cuddling so I invited him into bed and he slept with me. But they will do what you expect them to do, just let them know the clues. We have one dog who likes to sleep on the cold tiles in the bathroom, and the other sleeps on the memory foam pad at the bottom of the bed or on the leather couch in the living room. But mornings...they want to snuggle up and get their scratches.

Penny was one year old before I let her sleep in bed and now she can't wait to get in there with me! The one thing I do is make her wait by the side of the bed and invite her in - only then can she jump up. And she's 65 lbs. now - so she takes up plenty of room! But I have to admit, I love it.

Spud likes the cool floor and doesn't stay long in our bed...but he does come up for a quiet time pet. My sons, for years, fell asleep with me and then I carried them down the hall to their rooms to sleep.

In life, we wake up and start running full speed. All day long it's a rush, a run here and there. All the noise and brightness of the day. Unless it's dinner rarely do any of us sit down and bond with our families--including the dogs.

I found that bedtime was a wonderful time to talk with my kids about their days, It was when I really knew what was on their minds. It was a great time to express feelings in a quiet manner and put Everything To Rest. Now I do this with my dog. This may sound silly, but bedtime, for me, is a great time to bond. Then..... the dog, on his own, jumps to the floor and falls asleep :)

Kendra~ So sorry for you and Dan.

Kai sleeps in his crate until about 6-6:30 then he gets in bed with us and he will also climb up if we lay down during the day. Buys us some time on a lazy morning. :-)
I think it depends on your situation. I do want Kai to know that he is not the alpha dog so for us, sleeping in our bed all night is a no but that's us, I'm sure you find a way that works for all of you.

You have my sympathy Kendra for your losses!

When our waterbed died, we bought a king sized bed just so we could fit both on it if they wanted too :) We have always shared our bed with our dogs. Sometimes they are with us all night, sometimes one or the other, their choice.

I love dogs in my bed. Yankee has been allowed since he was 4 months old. He doesn't stay all night because it's too warm. He may stay for a little while and I snuggle with him and I love it. I said the same thing about all the rules, no bed etc etc. Broke all the rules and I don't care. You only live once. Do what you are comfortable with.

So sorry about all of the tragedy surrounding you this week. I am glad you can take comfort in Remington though. Dogs are great for that.
Our chihuahua has slept in the bed since day 1, but he is 6.5 pounds. DH said never again would another dog sleep in the bed and so far, we are sticking to it. I think it is a personal decision for you. I do think it is hard to get them to stop doing it once you make a habit out of it. Maybe just let him do it every once in a while.

Kendra, I'm so sorry for your loss, and for those of your friends. Wow, 56 is my husband's age - scary. Anyway, I would love to have Gus and Molly sleep in bed, but Mike says "no way". We also never let our former dogs sleep in bed. As much as I'd like it, I think he's right, because our pups run around in the woods a lot and get really dirty, and I would have to give them baths every night!
