Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Since Bernie was introduced to our home in September he's been obsessed with the mail. Not the mail carrier, but the items that come out of the box. Granted, I've documented his fondness for wood and paper related products, bark mulch, wrapping material, toilet paper, etc. but I've never understood the mail thing.

Other than perhaps the Doodle affliction for "you have it so I'm pretty sure I want it." And we're talking WANT it. Jumping, snatching, sneakily running his nose along the counter smelling for it. Getting from the front door to the kitchen is like trying to make it through an NFL defensive line.

Well, as the boss and the pack leader I've never let him have the mail, in addition to the issue with potentially destroying bills or something really important like a flier from the market up the street announcing a new vendor.

Today was different. I let him have the mail. I guess I was feeling generous, or masochistic. I was willing to deal with the chaos that I was sure would ensue. But he surprised me. I'm still not sure if he was setting me up, maybe he was playing against type for his own entertainment, but you couldn't believe my shock when he pranced off, about 5 feet away, and just spit it all out on the carpet. He looked at me then walked off to find something that interested him.

I had to post this here because it was one of those moments that only another dog owner, specifically a curious Doodle owner, could potentially appreciate.

Hmmm.  That is funny!  My Shelby also loves all paper product and while she doesn't show excitement or an eagerness to get to the mail as I bring it in.... when the opportunity arises and I place it within reach - it is sure to be destroyed!

Ha guess the taste of those envelopes wasn't as good as he thought it was! Laughable!

We have on some accusations let Guinness have a piece of junk mail, he carries it in proudly gives it to DH  & he says "Good Boy you brought me the mail"...than proceeds to tear it up. This is the only time he will do this, we can leave paper laying around and he will ignore it. If it is not given to him he will not touch it....

How funny is that.  He just wanted to WIN!  Once he got what he wanted...he didn't want it anymore.  The thrill was gone.  I had a DD just like that.

It's so funny! I agree he would be the CUTEST junk mail shredder we could hope to have =)

Im not sure why he did that but you can give him the junk mail to shred.

As long as the mail is the "forbidden fruit", I want it SOOO badly.  Once it's no longer forbidden, it's just no fun!

Don't you wonder sometimes what they are thinking?? We had a dog that wanted to carry the mail, but sometimes she didn't spit it out all the time :) Maybe now that he knows it isn't anything that great, he might lose interest. Or you could teach him to shred junk mail....LOL!
