I have been waiting anxiously for the pumpkin season to resume due to the shortages we all felt last year. I guess I have never been so aware of pumpkin in the stores as I have over this past year. It always seemed readily available whenever I needed it for the holidays, and otherwise,I never gave it any thought.

I don't even know if pumpkin is carried in the stores year round! Never noticed! So with the shortage of 2010 fresh in my mind, and the memories of going store to store to store and some DK'r's even ordering online, I have decided to not take any chances.

So ever since the first can was sited on the grocery store shelves about 6 weeks ago, I have been buying up pumpkin. Usually only 2 at a time, but since it's been on sale, I will get 4-6 cans at a time and even resorted to the BIG cans (just for a little added security).

Have I gone over the deep end on this? I would be embarassed to give you a count of how many I now have as I feel that a film crew will be coming in any minute with a therapist to do a "Pumpkin Hoarding Intervention".

Am I alone here or will anyone else admit to this sad sickness? Maybe you even have some insight into how stores stock pumpkin year round so I can relax my viligiant effort of stocking up. HELP!!!

The Pumpkin Hoarder.

I just went to Target tonight and lo and behold there were only 2 lonely cans of pumpkin left on the shelf. My pumpkin hoarding addiction kicked in full steam as I could feel the fear of shortage rearing it's ugly head. I just couldn't help myself. And they were on sale. What's a girl to do? I think I am a lost cause.

Funny -you should say that Sue... my DH just went to Walmart last night and I told him to start buying pumpkin IN BULK!  I actually give her a few teaspoons with her meals each day... I don't know exactly IF it's doing anything, but aside from her 'issue' of finding the 'right' place, she's been great with her tummy!  KNOCK WOOD!!! (plus I think it helps when she occasionally still eats something she shouldn't - like paper, plastic, Q-tips...I think it coats it and helps it move out!)

If you are having any anticipation of needing pumpkin in the next 10 months you might want to look for some and buy it for safe keeping. My usual grocery store and local Target are out again. Albertson's had tons. Just want to give everyone a heads up.

That's what I was thinking too Shelly, although I have never looked for it out of season before owning Murphy. And soon after I realized how nicely it worked we had the shortage. Thus the HOARDING!!!! I have to go get some more now as the season will be over soon.....Need more pumpkin...need more pumpkin.

The canned pumpkin (100% pure only) is used to help digestive problems... soft stool, hard stool, etc...it works wherever the 'problem' is. It's usually only around here during the holiday season.. after that it's harder to find.

That's interesting Belinda. Do you make pumpkin pie only around Holloween then? Or is that not a UK thing? Do you have another remedy for loose stools you use there?

Sorry for being a little slow, here but is there a special reason for the pumpkin, we only have this at Halloween, never seen it in tins!

Pat, I have read that the potatoes, yams and pumpkin pretty much have the same effect. No harm in trying any of those.

I'm guessing that fresh cooked sweet potatoes or yams wouldn't do the same thing...?

Ok... since most of you don't even live near the east coast, much less Long Island, I'll disclose "my supplier's" name... It's Wal-Mart! LOL Great price and 100% pure pumpkin. but I warn you... purchasing just one can and literally seeing the results can get you and your doodle's digestive system "hooked"... happy shopping...Oh and by the way... the expiration date is years from now!

Real Canadian Superstore carries canned pumpkin all year round, and we also sell it at work (holistic pet store). I did buy some fresh pumpkin, roasted and pureed it and froze it in ice cubes though, as I try not to use cans
