Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Now, I've read all the articles that say poodles are one of the smartest dog breeds. Ostensibly, their intelligence is on par with a 3 year old's (I remain a little skeptical on that...I don't know any three year old humans who try to eat their own barf). Last night though, Callie displayed an intelligence that I found a little disconcerting. I was in the guest room/office working (love working for 4 hours after work...it's just been a super week like that) and Callie was laying on the bed, chewing on a toy. Or at least I thought it was a toy. It turned out to be a series of used q-tips, which I'm guessing she removed from my bathroom trash on her "Naughty Doodle Day". She had STASHED q-tips that she'd dug out of the trash under my bed and the guest bed. They weren't in neat piles or anything, but still - that's weird. Here's what I found alarming...
- she had to purposely separate the q-tips out from the rest of the efflivia in the trash
- she had to carry them and hide them in two separate spots
- she had to remember where those spots were
- she noticed when I was distracted and brought them out then

I know I tend to humanize Callie, but this just doesn't seem normal to me. If she's really this smart, I think she could be putting her skills to better use, like solving the economic crisis or doing my laundry.

I do feel lucky that friends include her. We didn't end up going to the party because I ran so late dealing with the blinds that Callie destroyed. ARGHHHH.

EmmasDad - that story cracked me up!

Frannie, you are really lucky your friends invite the dog.

There is just something about those Q-tips isn't there Callie? Thomas steals them too. We find them lying on the floor all the time. He doesn't eat them though-just bats them around for awhile.

Leslie - Halas is such a cutie! Callie does a similar thing to me...I end up just laughing my tush off while Callie is basically climing on top of me. She's coming with me to a party tonight (I love how my friends all invite me with my dog when they can!) so that will be an adventure!

They are sometimes too smart for their own good. But that's what makes it so fun to do obedience and other activities with them. I'm with you on the bringing joy thing. Halas makes me laugh every day. Last night he was climbing all over trying to chew on my hair and lick my face, and he manages to pin my arms so I can't fight him off. I was laughing so hard.

Oh, how hilarious. A hoarder. I'm comparing my labs to these guys and as much as I hate to admit it, they are smarter. Luckily (?) I'm getting one--a doodle, I mean. But do I really want to be outsmarted by a dog?????

The whole thing made me laugh, but I spent the rest of the night looking at her and wondering if and what she was thinking!! I'm so glad that I have my little Callie...I know I sound like a nerd, but she really does bring so much to my life!

You crack me up! I can just see Callie running around with her qtips! So funny.

When it comes to "naughtyness" they are brilliant and a little scary. Guinness is way too impulsive and undisciplined to do this. He would not be able to steal the Qtips, then hide them and leave them alone until I wasn't looking. He would have shoved them all into his mouth at once, then gone into another room and done his best to eat as many as possible before getting caught. Callie is not only a doodle genius, she is a disciplined and devious dood.
