PACIFIER!! UGH!
It's been quite a week here in our crazy house. For those of you who don't know, I have a 6 week old son, Patrick, and 2 doodles. (I have noticed, however, that I post far more crazy stories about Seamus than I do about Stella....he's a monster lol).
But anyway....On Thursday I rushed my son to his pediatrician because I thought he had a fever....he totally didn't and I felt like an idiot when their thermometer read 98.3...mine read 99.7. On Friday, I realized that I had developed a severe infection (mastisis) which often happens to nursing mothers. I wound up having a 102 degree fever and basically felt like I got hit by a truck.
Then today, it happened....Now Seamus has always been interested in my son's pacifiers. He has stolen one in the past, sniffed one, licked it....but we never thought he would actually eat one.
So today when we finished lunch, we picked Patrick up from his little chair, which is at Seamus' level, and within 30 seconds, Seamus grabbed the pacifier from the chair, ran into the dining room, went under the table where he can't be reached, and literally swallowed it whole. UNBELIEVABLE!
We called the vet and to my disappointment (even though I knew what was coming) he told us to induce vomiting with hydrogen peroxide. We used a turkey baster (I guess we'll never use that again for Thanksgiving) to shoot the stuff into poor Seamus' mouth. I felt terrible and the poor guy didn't even know what hit him. I cannot imagine how awful it must feel.... LUCKILY it worked and about a half hour later out came the foamy pacifier, along with other disgusting stomach contents.
Seamus is still sulking at the moment, but he did eat dinner and seems to be feeling better. So, I guess lesson learned....No more pacifiers (or anything else tiny and attractive to dear Seamus for that matter) ANYWHERE that our big guy can grab them.
UPDATE from Seamus:
It's been a bad week for me...I don't understand why mom and dad had to make me drink that gross stuff =( Yesterday was a better day though...mom made me rice and a boiled hamburger and I didn't throw up at all. And I ate breakfast this morning too! I had no appetite for 2 days after I ate my little brother's special chew toy. All I know is that I'm never going near one of those things again!

Not to be a kill joy, but my sister's dog ate a nipple from a baby's bottle. He kept getting sick, not eating..then a little better, then the same cycle, sickm better.....The nipple did not show up on an xray, and before the vet could do a barium test, the nipple rubbed through his intestines. The dog died of peritonitis. Very sad. Keep an eye on those pacifiers!
Congrats on your new bundle of joy!!!
Oh my, u certainly did have a wild week...Congratulations on the new baby, and I am glad that Seamus is ok...I think the idea of the turkey baster is a great one...So sorry that you had this bad experience with you being ill, and then Seamus doing this, but tomorrow is another week beginning, lets hope it is a better one for you..Hugs...
Glad the hydrogen peroxide worked. I'm sure pacifiers with milk and baby saliva must smell delicious to a dog. It's not easy.
You do have your hands full! I'm glad Seamus is okay. One thought, have you seen the clip ons for pacifiers? The one I saw was like a suspender with clips on both ends, one for the pacifier and the other end is clipped to clothing or it could be clipped to infant seat, stroller, etc.
Jane, when we called the vet he gave us the dose and it seemed to be according to the dog's weight. Seamus is just about 90 pounds so he got the maximum dose. It was 3 tablespoons...then wait 10 minutes and if it didn't come up, another 3 tablespoons. Of course we had to do the second round which was awful for him because he knew what was coming. And the second time we did it, the top of the turkey baster shot off and covered us with the peroxide too. LOL what a day!
But anyway, within about 30 mins after everything, Seamus threw up the pacifier. He threw up a total of 4 times I think...including the time when we let him back in the house and he decided to throw up on the ONE rug I have in my house. We just used regular hydrogen peroxide...had to borrow it from our neighbors...I'm pretty sure they thought we were crazy!
So glad everything turned out okay. Just a word of caution, though - keeping pacifiers away from Seamus now, with a six week old, is going to be a lot easier than when Patrick is crawling and walking. Our granddaughter is 20 months old and still loves her "pacie". The problem is she'll leave them all over the place during her travels through the house. Thankfully, when Sedona finds one, she'll either ignore it or just carry it around in her mouth.
Good luck keeping track of those pacifiers in the weeks and months to come!! :)
Scary. glad you could get him to vomit it up!
OMD - who would have thought that he could swallow it whole? So do you use regular hydrogen peroxide? How much do you use? I love the turkey baster idea! So how long after you put it down there do they start to throw up? Poor Seamus and poor you too!!! I hope you are feeling better and I hope that Seamus learned his lesson, I appreciate you sharing this with us.
My goodness...what a week you've had! Good job getting that pacifier back....I'm glad he's ok. I hope you're feeling better and the infection has cleared for you. It's been more years than I'd like to admit....but I remember well what a busy time it is with a baby, take care of yourself.
I am so glad the pacifier came out. Don't you wonder what the heck they are thinking? It sounds like you have your hands full and I hope you feel better!! Good luck!
