Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

This morning as I was worrying about my Therapy Dog Appointments for the month of March because it is already mid month and I have not even started them because of my little foster puppy here I got to thinking about Therapy Pet Testing. Although Sophie and Lucy are both registered with 2 local organizations who do their own testing, I have yet to test either of them with Delta Society because there are a couple areas I'm not sure they will pass yet. Sophie does great on her visits, Lucy I take on very few visits because she is so shy! Keep in mind since Day 1 of their coming into our home I have been working with them to take the Delta Test -- they just turned 2. Enter Topper, our foster puppy. He is just over six months, and I would be willing to bet that I could take him today and take the test and pass. He has never had any obedience training, much less any specific therapy pet training, but I think he is just meant to be a therapy dog! His sole purpose seems to be to want to please. He will lay his head in your lap, he sits perfectly, he is calm around strangers, he just doesn't seem to have a fear in the world. I think this is the perfect example of you can teach a dog obedience, but you can't teach them to be therapy pets. If they don't enjoy that type thing, you aren't really going to change their mind about it! I think my Sophie falls into the category of she tolerates it .... she doesn't love it! I think Lucy falls into the Take Sophie and leave me home category!

They feed off each others excitment! MamaDoodle must be a very exciting person in the girls world! They are very lucky! You are a wonderful foster Mom - you have learned Topper and will be able to let his forever family know what makes him tick - the good and the bad so they know what to expect.
I am thrilled he will be going with a family where he will have room to run!

I'm not sure about all that Karen ...... I think when he goes to his new home I need a long nap!

I may have spoken too soon ..... My mom just stopped by and he acted like an idiot ...... originally ....... so excited. I think we can credit Lucy and Sophie for that! They just get too excited when Mamaw comes to visit. I will rewrite to say outside the home, on a leash, he acts like a perfect gentleman when he greets people!

Topper sounds amazing, and he must be very comfortable with your family to be so calm and loving. It certainly seems like he is going to have a wonderful future in his forever home. You have given him a special gift of your time and love as he awaits his adoption. High fives to Lucy and Sophie too for being great foster big sisters.

Gosh, imagine that! A rescue dog without issues, one who "is just meant to be a therapy dog! His sole purpose seems to be to want to please. He will lay his head in your lap, he sits perfectly, he is calm around strangers, he just doesn't seem to have a fear in the world."!!! LOL
Seriously, a lot of the credit for this goes to you. I think you may just have been meant to be a foster mom!

Oh I must have missed that - didn't know he had been placed. Wow he is going to be happy - good work!
I know we aren't supposed to really talk about it, but T's program is great. I couldn't be happier with my girl.

Allyson -- Topper will be leaving here in about a week to go to his new forever home. He will be a New York dog. He has a wonderful new family with 3 kids. They live by a lake and have a swimming pool and a big ole fenced yard. He is going to love having kids to play with. I will be talking to her about Therapy work.

I've heard lots of wonderful things about Terri's program.

Topper is going to find a wonderful family - he sounds GREAT!!! You should encourage the adoptive family to do therapy with him if they have time.
Sounds like you are having fun :)
Oh and by the way, my Peri came from Goldens-n-doodles (saw your other post). She was born one week after the red gang.
