This morning as I was worrying about my Therapy Dog Appointments for the month of March because it is already mid month and I have not even started them because of my little foster puppy here I got to thinking about Therapy Pet Testing. Although Sophie and Lucy are both registered with 2 local organizations who do their own testing, I have yet to test either of them with Delta Society because there are a couple areas I'm not sure they will pass yet. Sophie does great on her visits, Lucy I take on very few visits because she is so shy! Keep in mind since Day 1 of their coming into our home I have been working with them to take the Delta Test -- they just turned 2. Enter Topper, our foster puppy. He is just over six months, and I would be willing to bet that I could take him today and take the test and pass. He has never had any obedience training, much less any specific therapy pet training, but I think he is just meant to be a therapy dog! His sole purpose seems to be to want to please. He will lay his head in your lap, he sits perfectly, he is calm around strangers, he just doesn't seem to have a fear in the world. I think this is the perfect example of you can teach a dog obedience, but you can't teach them to be therapy pets. If they don't enjoy that type thing, you aren't really going to change their mind about it! I think my Sophie falls into the category of she tolerates it .... she doesn't love it! I think Lucy falls into the Take Sophie and leave me home category!
