Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Hi, I have posted most of this on "my post",not realizing that I should have posted here.. We are empty nesters for the most part now after being married for 33 yrs. It took alot of soul searching to decide to get another dog since it has been 6 yrs since our Chow has passed, and finally being free to go when and where we want and not worrying about a pet. To make a long story short, we decided to add a puppy to our family. I have been doing research on the goldendoodle and decided on one. After seaching around for one we ended up driving to Kentucky to get one. ( we live in WV).. We decided on one that was 2 months old, male. Now to the crazy? part.....not only did we get Scrappy, but I found myself in the back seat with not one, but TWO puppies!! Scappy had a half brother that was 2 1/2 weeks older that had not been adopted from his litter. (same father, different mothers)....sooooooo we also took Shaggy home too!! I do not know what possessed us! A major "senior moment" I guess.....haha....The first night home, we were up at 5AM with the pups. As we were standing out side in the snow to potty, we both started to laugh. I said"well we did say we wanted something to do together as we got older!!!". If someone would have seen us they would have sworn we were crazy! It has been three weeks saturday since our new family has joined us. I think we have laughed more in the 3 wks, then in 3 months before......probably more frustration too! Trying to potty train, stop the biteing of each other and us.........but definitely the fun wins out in the end.....Any and all suggestions and help is greatly appreciated. Thanks for listening to my story.....sorry so long......Have a great day!

We are also empty nesters and last year we got two labradoodle puppies - one in March and the second in May. We have had so much fun with the two puppies this last year. We had them both potty trained within a few months and have them both in a dog training class now. They love playing together and are well mannered most of the time. We have taken them with us on some trips and had a great time. I think you will enjoy having two puppies together. Get all the potty training, jumping, chewing and mouthing over with at one time.
We have enjoyed every minute of the last year and wouldn't change a thing. We still laugh at something they do every day. Enjoy your puppies. Positive reinforcement works great.

I am going Friday to pick up our new puppy. We already have a 15 month old Labradoodle named Fudge. She now sleeps in every morning, is pretty low maintenance, and we just love her. "What was I thinking?" has been going through my mind a lot too these days. However, when I look at his picture, I just can't wait!!

Congrats!! We did the same thing, we have 2 brothers from the same litter though. They are 6 months old now, so we are still learning too! Our kids are 10 & 11 so they have been a huge help to us. Our boys, Cooper & Duncan, rough house & play w/each other all the time, I used to worry about it too, but apparently it is normal. Potty training has been a challenge for us because they both chose to learn in their own time, Duncan is a slow learner & doesn't ring the bells but Cooper seems to know & rings for him! But we still have "accidents" even at 6 months old! Time, patience & lots of love! I have learned so much from all the great people here on Doodlekisses & I'm sure you will too! You have definately come to the right place! Best of luck!

Lucy & Sophie's mom: I don't think the fact that they were both in class together is a big deal. I think the thing warned against is one person trying to train two dogs at once. Versus taking one dog to train at a time....

Apparently there are several of us having "senior moments" these days. DH and I did the same thing. We retired with great plans to travel and be "free". We did it for a year and then it got really old. So, we got our first Doodle a year ago....and it was the best thing we ever did. Now we have a new puppy that we adopted two weeks ago. We're very familiar with that 5:00 AM trip outside in the rain, cold, snow. That went on for the first week with the new puppy. Then he went till 6:00, and now we're up to 6:30...so it does keep getting better. I started Murphy (the puppy) in obedience training right away (11 wks and after the second set of shots). There is a couple with two puppies from the same litter in our class, and the trainer also gave them the same advice as Adina. She said it's really important to keep them from bonding too closely, and therefore not recognizing you as the pack leaders. Good luck, and get ready for your world to be "rocked" but in a good way.

I guess we took a little different approach than some in that ours went to training classes together. Both DH and I went. We would swap off throughout the sessions so that each dog trained with each of us and wasn't only used to commands from just one of us. We started with Beginner obedience at 3 months, then intermediate and then advanced. For the first six months DH wasn't working so we had lots of time to train. The trainer said originally when we signed up that we could do beginner together but when we started intermediate we should separate them. However, when the time came, she said that they were doing fine and she didn't see any need to separate them. The only issue that resulted is that they were never apart. So when I started doing some therapy work and doing it mostly with Sophie, this left Lucy home alone and she would howl while we were gone. I have started having special treats and things for her to do while we are gone and she is no longer bothered by that. All of our classes were small with either only us or one other dog and that was all. My personal advice is you should start early with not allowing them to run in the house! It is cute when they weigh 10 lbs, but when you have two 60 lb dogs doing zoomies in the house they will knock over the furniture! The happiest day you have ahead of you is when the last puppy teeth come out!

I can't imagine two puppies, one was bad enough! But seriously, it is worth all of the work and effort. I'm sure it will be double the fun, for them and you!
