We lost our big yellow tabby cat, Felix, a few years ago to cancer.  He was Holly's best buddy and they would play for hours.  We really had no intention of replacing Felix but, we visited a cat show in San Diego this weekend, just to look at the various breeds of cats for fun and education.

We saw a kitten that we almost adopted.  He was half Maine Coon and half Norwegian Forest Cat and was a beauty with a white face, dark tabby back and a wonderful personality.  He was also going to grow up to be a big guy.  The rescue agency estimated that his final size would be over twenty pounds.  We could see him playing with Holly and also taking care of some field mice around our property.

Unfortunately he had just been spoken for by another family.  That isn't surprising because he was such a cut above the other cats up for adoption.

In a way, it is better...  After-all, one of the reasons we selected Holly was her lack of serious shedding.  This kitty had long-long hair.  But, it might have been worth it because he was so magnificent.  He was the only cat we have been interested in adopting since we lost Felix.

We have a 5 & a 16 year old cats.  Cleo (5 yr) and Harlow are starting to get along but Cleo still likes to attack Harlow from under the bed.  Moonshine our 16 yr old cat just ignores Harlow.  Cleo is strictly an indoor cat and Moonshine is an indoor/outdoor cat.  He prefers to sleep in our garage so we installed a cat door on our garage door for him, as well as a heater and bed.  He comes in the house every morning for a can of cat food.

I would love to have a Maine Coon as well.  Our 2 weigh only a whopping 7 pounds with their winter weight.

I have 2 7 year old cats. Cooper loves them, Pippin likes Cooper and they will occasional snuggle and Pippin will wander between Coopers legs and Cooper will give her a kiss. Merry isnt too interested in Cooper. The cats are totally the boss of Cooper, but unfortunately they do not play. I really want to get another cat to play with Cooper. My breed of choice is a Devon Rex, but DH says I cant have one right now (the time isnt right), but I hope within the next year....

I think another cat is in your future too :)

Aww, the relationship Felix had with your dogs sounds so sweet.  Amazing that he and Sara Lee hunted together.  How cool!  Nice trick with the can too.  Benji (my childhood cat) came if you called his name in an eight-note song ending with two kiss sounds.  //eye roll// at myself.

Our Felix was also an indoor/outdoor cat.  We have a fenced acre and he would roam all of it and did an excellent job removing field mice and gophers.  We trained him to come home in the afternoon with a can of cat food.  We fed Felix dry kibble but, we would keep a can of wet food available. He learned to come to the can when we hit it with a spoon. We would give him a couple of licks and then put the can back in the fridge until the next time we wanted to call him.  It worked great,  A can of food would last for about a week and then it was time to open another.

Our big dog previous to Holly was, Sara Lee,  a Golden Retriever - German Shepherd - Wolf mixture.  It was quite unbelievable how Felix would team up to hunt gophers with Sara.  We would see him put his ear next to the ground listening for gophers digging below.  When he heard one, he would somehow communicate to the dog and she would dig down to the gopher hole.  Then, Sara would grow bored and walk off for someplace that had more excitement.  Not Felix!  He would wait all day by the hole and then when  a gopher stuck its head out, Felix would have him.

Although Felix and Holly were great friends, they never had that hunting communications agreement.

I'm sorry you lost your kitty, Felix.

And I am sorry you didn't get to adopt this guy.  I hope you can find another.

I grew up with a part Maine Coon cat, and he was fantastic.  He never got past ten pounds but he did the trilling Maine Coon meow when he was excited, he came when called, and he loved to hunt.  He also lived to 21 yrs despite being an outdoor-during-the-day cat.

Early on, he made it very clear that he HAD to spend time outside.  He'd try to turn the doorknob endlessly and he'd cry by the door until he lost his voice....pathetic!
