I just took my 6 month old doodle for his first grooming consultation. I explained to the groomer that I only wanted scissor cut and only a trim. I told her I like the way he looks now and I don't want that look to change. I told her I don't want to end up with a poodle hair cut. She was ok with everything except she said she would have to shave around the private area not scissor cut. She said this area is dangerous to use scissors. Does anyone have an opinion on this? I heard that shaving will not allow the hair to grow back the same way. He's really perfect now, no matts or anything. Anyone have advice on this?

Your groomer is right. That area needs to be shaved. The coat you are seeing is his puppy coat the new coat will start coming in around 8 months. You need to start combing at the skin and out while this is happening to keep his coat from tangling together
I have never shaved my almost 2 year old doodle. I verrry carefully cut the hair short around the anal area and the surroundings and I've never had a problem . See the recent discussion on a doodle shaved too closely. Make sure to avoid nicking the skin when scissoring.
I have a female and I make sure she only gets a "mini sanitary". Once they shaved under her tail and all the way down the backs and insides of her legs. I really don't want to walk her and see everything she owns (so to speak)!. We keep the "pee pee" area clipped back just for cleanliness and the "under the tail clipped/shaved just in the immediate area. With a male I am not sure what needs to be clipped and how much????
She is right. Shaving is much safer than scissoring. I shave bellies, private areas, under arms and behind and under the ears. I am careful not to take away too much hair as I don't want a shaggy dog with a nude bum. I leave a little loin cIoth for my intact boys. I usually shave inside the feet and in between the toes as well.
With a razor, you can get a scrape or a burn, with a pair of scissors, you could do a lot more damage than that. I hate to think about it.
Ok so I trimmed my Neelys penis hair. IT is a disaster. Note my blog for details. How long will it take to regrow? I scissored it off since I didn't want to give him a razor burn on it. I left a little bit of stubble. How short should I have trimmed it is the first question for future refference. Secondly how long will it or ever grow back. Thirdly is there anything that can make him more comfortable while enduring this? He is responding fairly well considering, it we tell him to leave it. It has totally affected him mentally. Help please.
